Autumn 1997. St. Petersburg.

A dismal, cold rain pounded outside the window of an old communal apartment on Vasilievsky Island in St. Petersburg. The room was filled with the lingering smell of cigarette smoke, cheap instant coffee, and damp jackets drying on the radiator.

Andrey sat on the floor among a pile of cassette tapes, scattered clothes, and guitar wires. He wore worn jeans, his ever-present pen in his hand, and a thick notebook on his lap.

The prince sighed, adjusted his bangs that had fallen over his forehead, and rested his chin on his fist. He had just delivered the last line of the lyrics to a new song and scribbled another sketch in the margins. The room was quiet—only the tapping of raindrops on the cornice and the hum of the old refrigerator drifting from the hallway.

Andrey turned his head towards Mikha, who was sitting nearby on a sagging sofa with an acoustic guitar in his hands.

"Mikh, check this out... " Andrey said quietly, so as not to disturb the strange tone of the night's silence. He sat a little closer on the carpet and turned the notebook toward Gorshok, pointing his finger at the new lines. "I rewrote the verse here so the rhythm would fit your melody better. Take a look, will you? Or are you lost in your thoughts again?"

The prince looked closely at his friend, squinting and waiting for a reaction - either an argument about music, or another crazy idea that always burned in Mikha's eyes.
