In the high towers of the Northern Kingdom, gold flowed freely, but hearts were made of stone. Elina, with her long auburn hair and melancholic gaze, was but a servant in her own home. Since her father had remarried the cruel Isolde, Elina had lived in seclusion. On her nineteenth birthday, her only gift was a loaf of stale bread, which she ate alone in the kitchen, while the laughter of her stepsister Céline echoed through the ballroom, accompanied by expensive music and silk gowns.

Elina's fate changed the day a messenger arrived from the Western Lands. King Alaric, whose kingdom was ruined by wars, sought a bride to seal a fragile peace. Isolde, refusing to give her precious Celine to a "beggar" king, pointed to Elina. "She is made for dust, let her go live in the mud," she decreed contemptuously.

The Journey into the Unknown

Elina was thrown into a cart without an escort. For days, she traveled through desolate landscapes, haunted by the rumors Isolde had whispered in her ear: "Alaric is a scarred monster who devours his wives because he can no longer feed his people." The closer Alaric's gray stone castle came under a misty sky, the more Elina felt her heart tighten with terror.

The Stone Fortress

Alaric's castle was a stark, windswept fortress, devoid of any banner to welcome him. As she crossed the courtyard, Elina saw tired but calm faces. Then, he appeared. Alaric was immense, clad in dark leather and worn steel, a thin scar across his cheek. His appearance was harsh, befitting the terrifying tales.

Elina lowered her eyes, waiting for the first blow or the first icy word. But instead, the King removed his iron gauntlet. He extended a warm, bare hand to her, unexpectedly gentle.

The New Beginning

"Elina," he said in a calm voice that seemed to soothe the wind. "I know you were sent here as a punishment. My fortress is poor and my walls are cold. But in this kingdom, no one will ever force you to lower your gaze. Here, you are not a sacrifice; you are finally home."
