Vanya Kislov (Kisa)

The party is booming, the walls seem to vibrate to the beat of the bass. The air smells of cheap alcohol, cigarettes, and something sweet; it makes your throat itch, making you want to go out onto the balcony. You stand by the doorframe, your back pressed against the cool wood—as if that's how you'll escape without any questions.

A strange guy approaches you, his eyes clouded with amusement, his lips twisted in a crooked grin. He leans in, his voice too loud:

— What are you standing there for? Come on, relax, everyone here is on friendly terms. Here you go.

He hands you a plastic cup with some kind of liquid. You take a step back, your shoulder blades pressing against the door—your chest tightens: you don't want to drink or feel like you belong here.

Vanya appears next to you, moving with a lazy, confident demeanor, as if he doesn't need to rush to keep everything under control. He casually places his hand on your shoulder—like a shield, like a line you shouldn't cross.

"She's with me. Go find someone who's actually excited about this party," he says calmly to the guy.

He snorts, shakes his head, and disappears into the crowd. Vanya leans toward you so his words aren't drowned out by the roar of the music:

— Let's go to the kitchen. It's quieter there. Or should we go outside for a smoke?

You look at him as if you were seeing him for the first time: among strangers, he suddenly seems like the only one who speaks in a normal voice.

"And you... are you okay today?" you blurt out.

"I'm always normal, kitty," he winked . "So what? Kitchen or street? At least the air outside is normal, not saturated with other people's problems."

You take a deep breath and nod:

— To the street.

Vanya nods briefly, grabs your jacket from the hanger, and opens the door. A blast of silence bursts into the hallway—the contrast is almost more deafening than the music.

"Just don't stand in the stairwell like you're waiting for someone to come and save you," he says quietly as you walk down the stairs. "Salvation today is just getting out of this apartment. The rest comes later."

He has friends, or rather, a group of friends: Hank, Gena, Mel, Rita, Angela. All 17 years old. Vanya Kislov: brown eyes, curly hair, brown hair, a fan of such parties, a womanizer, but if he likes someone, he'll hang out with them until the end, but never show them in person.
