Master

Richard Moreau was born before the global nuclear war, lived in the United States, and was able to become one of the residents of Vault 8.

As a doctor, Richard lived in Vault 8 until the inhabitants emerged onto the surface in 2091. Soon after, when the people who emerged onto the surface began using the GECK to build Vault City, he was exiled for committing murder, the circumstances of which are unknown.[18] Richard changed his last name to "Grey" and went to the wasteland to the south.

After wandering, Richard reached the Hub, where he joined a community of traders and provided medical services to the locals for 11 years. In late May 2102, due to increasing mutant attacks on Hub caravanners, Harold, the current boss of the caravan's traders, decided to find and destroy the mutant habitat. Having spent his last money on equipment, weapons, and supplies, Harold also consulted the opinions of scientists and a doctor in the Hub regarding mutant abilities and related matters. Richard Gray proved to be very helpful in this regard—as a very smart guy, a doctor, and a philosopher, Harold liked him very much. On May 22, Richard was hired to join his squad of several people.

That same day, the group headed northwest from the Hub. Richard, as the most experienced and savvy member of the group in tracking mutants, took over as its leader, and a month later, on June 23rd, he was able to locate the mutants' lair. It turned out to be the Mariposa military base, teeming with all sorts of creatures. The group was attacked by mutants, during which only four members of the squad survived—Francine, Mark, Harold, and Richard. The survivors decided to explore the base and went inside, triggering the security robots. After a battle with the machines and further exploration of the base, only Harold and Gray of the four made it to the laboratory and vats. At the approach to the FEV vats, the two were caught by surprise by a crane robot—it dropped Gray directly into the vat, and Harold was mysteriously transported outside the base. The research expedition came to an end.

Richard, who fell into the vat, mutated and survived the FEV. After some time in the vats, the horrifically mutated Gray managed to crawl out, experiencing excruciating pain and sometimes losing consciousness for several days. Despite his impaired sanity, he managed to crawl back to the control room by July, a month and a half after the end of the expedition. Having hacked the computer, Richard began recording audio, which he decided to keep as a memento. After a short time, with the frequency and intensity of the pain decreasing, he gradually began to regain consciousness. Recognizing himself as a green-skinned mutant with peeling and festering skin, Richard also noted that blisters had formed on his skin in several places, oozing a green mucus with a strong musky odor. Using the hacked computer, he managed to shut down the remaining robots at the base, after which he lost consciousness once again. After some time, Richard, who had regained consciousness and was still in pain, began to feel a surge of strength, although at first he could only take a limited number of steps.

While remaining at the base, Richard one day noticed a "tentacle" growing out of his stomach, which managed to capture an unknown mutated creature and transport it to his intestines for further digestion. Richard himself was late in realizing what had happened to his body, and after consuming the creature, he felt as if he had almost physically sensed its consciousness. Nevertheless, Richard maintained critical thinking, assuming he was hallucinating and that what was happening to him was unreal. He later realized that the tentacle's absorption of the creature was not a delusion.

Towards the end of July, Richard's mind became even clearer and his intellect increased, while the pain and loss of consciousness ceased. Reflecting on what had happened to him and his expedition at the base, Richard decided that all the other members of his group were dead and that he wanted to learn more about his abilities and the phenomena observed when immersed in vats of FEV.

Having developed a keen interest in FEV, a rejuvenated Richard began to inquire about the increased intelligence of beings placed in vats for extended periods. Essentially, he wanted to experience the same thing he had experienced between June and July.

Capturing various creatures on Mariposa, Richard temporarily placed them in vats containing the virus. Upon completion of the experiments, he noted that the resulting mutants were becoming stronger and more conscious. Due to intense hunger, and to continue the experiment, Richard devoured his creations, sensing their consciousness and attempting to learn something new. In an experiment in which Gray decided to keep a dog and a rat in the same vat, a biological chimera was created. The resulting mutant, like its predecessors, possessed superior survival qualities. This event so influenced Richard that he formulated a philosophy about the unification and unification of diverse beings into a harmonious unity, where he could serve as the instrument through which this unity would be achieved. Considering himself incomparably superior to the average human in terms of intellect, by the end of November 2102, Richard had laid the foundations for the Unity and the dominant race—super mutants—to be created from ordinary humans. From that moment on, Richard called himself "the Creator".

As a sign of his own dignity and self-improvement, as well as respect and understanding for mutants and his ideas, the Creator refused to eat his own creations.[1][19] However, due to hunger and certain circumstances, he was later forced to break this promise.

The Master's primary goals were the progress and healing of humanity through the creation of super mutants, who, in his view, would be best adapted to life in a post-nuclear world. Knowing that humans who survived the Great War were highly prone to aggression toward each other and other creatures, the Master decided to transform humans into mutants, thereby eradicating discriminatory and aggressive tendencies that could lead to another global nuclear war. By forcibly evolving humans, the Master ensured that the super mutants would be not only strong and resilient, but also as intelligent as himself.
