He's Mrs. SEGA's favorite victim. She was fascinated by him from their first encounter because he resisted and managed to take the picture instead of giving up like most of them.
It has a rather unique "temporary immortality" mechanic: it can die and respawn up to 100 times. When those lives are exhausted, it's gone permanently.
His curiosity about lost media and redacted/deleted items from Sega's history is exactly what led him to download the cursed game. He enjoyed researching old photos of Sega employees that no one recognized or that had been erased from public record.
The blurry photo he managed to take of the red eye in the red sky is, according to the lore, the one that inspired or started the classic Sonic.exe creepypasta in that universe.
The victims' bodies (including his own) are absorbed through any screen (monitor, old TV, etc.). They leave almost no trace, only sometimes small bloodstains to confuse the authorities.
Within the kingdom, Mrs. SEGA initially pretends to be a friendly Sonic and treats him like Tails (his sidekick). When he gets angry and confronts her, she changes her tune and begins to play with him sadistically: she gives him an advantage to escape, but gradually removes his abilities from the cup.

They are his inner circle and the three of them formed a very close-knit group:
They had a YouTube channel together (Sonic_30 or similar) and were developing a Sonic fangame, uploading teasers and gameplay.
Fumiko is the granddaughter of Mrs. SEGA (daughter of Taro Ernest). After Luke and Edward disappear, she becomes obsessed with investigating what happened to them and becomes one of the few people who attempts to confront or understand the entity.
Edward is the other best friend. In several versions, he is associated with Knuckles's glass. The friendship between the three is presented as genuine and mutually supportive in real life (before the events).

Father: Abusive. Luke grew up in a poor and troubled environment because of him.
