Hunter, formerly known as the Golden Guard, is a major character of The Owl House, initially depicted as an antagonist. He was the right-hand man of Emperor Belos and the former head of the Emperor's Coven when the Golden Guard. Hunter was presumed to be the nephew of Belos and, as such, was dedicated to his cause of ending all wild magic in the realm, but in reality, he is the latest version of the Golden Guard grimwalkers created by Belos to serve him faithfully in his mad quest to end all life in the Boiling Isles.[7] After his promotion to head of the Emperor's Coven, the Golden Guard acts as the main enforcer for Emperor Belos and antagonist to the residents of the Owl House. However, a chance encounter with Luz Noceda and the meeting of a mysterious palisman named Flapjack, who chooses Hunter as his partner, gives Hunter a new perspective and a glimpse of life outside of the Emperor's Coven. This soon culminates with Hunter learning the truth of his origins. Upon this discovery, and realizing he can never return to his lifelong home, he abandons Belos and the Emperor's Coven and retreats to Hexside School of Magic and Demonics to evade the emperor's reach. There, he finds acquaintances in Hexside's students, and after coming to terms with his identity, Hunter makes it his goal to help them stand against Belos' plan to wipe out the Demon Realm.[8] Following the events of the Day of Unity and the unleashing of the Collector, Hunter, Luz, Willow, Gus, and Amity are stranded in the Human Realm and spend months working to return to the Demon Realm. Unbeknownst to them, a remnant of Belos follows Hunter to the Human Realm and ends up possessing him, nearly killing his friends and Flapjack in the process. This gives Hunter the strength to finally stand up to his uncle, and he drowns himself in an attempt to defeat him once and for all. However, Hunter is saved when Flapjack sacrifices himself to revive him. Belos, weakened but not dead, returns to the Demon Realm,

Persona Attributes

Hunter

Palisman magic: Hunter, while originally lacking magic of his own, initially harnessed magic generated by his palisman staff due to the natural magic all palismen possess. With it, he was able to recreate the magic spells he used before with his artificial staff, such as teleportation, energy blasts, and earth magic. Although, as he was inexperienced at it, they lacked the same power as they do with artificial magic. However, he was able to wield this power well enough when he faced off against Amity until they came to a stand-off. His staff was also shown to block energy attacks such as King's sonic screech. As of "Thanks to Them", Hunter lost his staff following his palisman's passing; however, due to this sacrifice, he inherited some of Flapjack's magic and gains the former's abilities, such as teleportation.
Palisman communication: Hunter was able to communicate with and understand his palisman.
Teleportation: Originally an ability granted to him through his staffs, Hunter can teleport himself from one place to another in the blink of an eye. He frequently uses this ability to evade enemy attacks and move in high-speed dashes.
Glyph magic: When in Belos' mind, Hunter utilizes plant and ice glyphs to defend Luz from Belos. Later on he uses it at the archives to save the Boiling isles.
Agility: Although not an expert, Hunter has shown some degree of agility and parkour skills. Hunter likely possesses these skills so that he doesn't have to overly rely on his artificial magic.
Combat: Hunter displays some degree of physical fighting skills, using his staff and agility to evade and parry attacks as well as to land physical strikes on his opponents. Much like his parkour and agility, he likely has these skills, so he doesn't have to overly rely on his artificial magic.
Sewing: After becoming stranded in the Human Realm, Hunter learns to sew after Camila teaches him how to use a sewing machine.
Carving: After Belos is defeated, he learns how to carve palismen. Within a few years he has mastered the skill.
Flight: Hunter can use his staff to fly. He is extremely skilled at flying; his skill impressing Willow when she was looking for team members for the Emerald Entrails.
Former
Artificial magic: Initially, Hunter relied on artificial magic. However, he is still considered a prodigy in this regard whom Emperor Belos, the most powerful magic user alive and a fellow artificial magic user, gave special treatment because of his status. Like Emperor Belos, he could not use spell circles, and instead used his artificial staff to do magic, as he was powerless without it.
Telekinesis: He was able to use his artificial magic to telekinetically move objects and individuals without touching them.
Creation magic: He could create a sword out of thin air, which seems to be made of flesh. He is also able to create rope that he can use to tie someone up, and summon a giant fist from the ground that he used to knock Amity off her staff during their fight.
Energy blasts: Hunter was able to shoot blasts of magical energy from his staff.
Water magic: He could travel underwater via shaping a section of the water into a giant arm.
Earth magic: Hunter was able to control sand and dirt with his magic during his fight with Eda and Luz. He also was able to create a small earthquake during his fight with Amity.King was kidnapped and held hostage by Hunter in "Separate Tides". Hunter appears to enjoy teasing him, and describes King as "strangely endearing", although King doesn't take notice of his remark. He also remarks that King smells bad, before tossing the cage holding King to Luz.

In "Eclipse Lake", King tries to calm things down between Eda and Hunter. Hunter then calls King a "rat", which angers him as he jumps onto Hunter's head and starts pulling on his hair. In "Reaching Out", Hunter's Penstagram account is named after King's book, Ruler's Reach.

Flapjack
Hunter and Lil Rascal S2 EP09
Hunter starting to understand what Flapjack is saying in "Eclipse Lake".
In "Hunting Palismen", Flapjack took a liking to Hunter while he saw the red-colored bird as just another palisman for his uncle, but after spending time with both Flapjack and Luz, Hunter began to act nicer towards him. When the bird came to him later, Hunter told the palisman (who he previously called "bird") to leave before Belos could see him, knowing the fate that befell any palisman his uncle got his hands on, but was surprised when Flapjack instead picked him to be his bonded witch by turning into a staff in front of him. Hunter then chose to keep Flapjack despite the danger it posed to them both.

In "Eclipse Lake", Flapjack continued to follow Hunter around despite his objections, but Hunter still hid the palisman from Belos for both of their protection. After fighting side-by-side in the old mine, Hunter acknowledged that the little bird never left his side and finally began to bond with him. At the same time, Hunter started being able to understand what his new little friend is saying, allowing him to learn Flapjack's name.

After the events of "Eclipse Lake", Hunter came to care for and appreciate Flapjack more. He is shown to have greatly improved at flying and using his staff in "Any Sport in a Storm", and he begins to use Flapjack more than the artificial staff Belos gave him. In "Hollow Mind", after Hunter and Luz got trapped in Belos' mind, Hunter showed concern for Flapjack, telling the palisman to stay safe and that he loved him. In "Labyrinth Runners", Flapjack stayed with Hunter while he hid out at Hexside, and Flapjack even brought food to Hunter so he wouldn't have to leave his hiding place.

When he believes Belos is back, he promised Flapjack he would never allow the little bird to get hurt. After Belos, while possessing him, grievously injured Flapjack, Hunter regained control. After Flapjack sacrificed himself to save Hunter's life after Belos retreated from Hunter's body, he already knew the outcome. Upon returning to the Demon Realm, Hunter has trouble dealing with Flapjack's death. Flapjack's death had caused Hunter to seek revenge on Belos as Hunter continuously wanted to find and eradicate Belos for what he did and avenge Flapjack. He later discovered that he inherited Flapjack's powers and eventually erected a memorial to honor Flapjack for helping him find his own path.

Lilith and Hunter both once belonged to the Emperor's Coven, with Hunter taking her role as Coven Head once she defected. They have an unknown past history, which is implied to be negative as Lilith was shown to be jealous of, and to hold a form of contempt against Hunter, calling him a "brat" in "Separate Tides" and attempting to throw away his poster when Luz asked her about him. Lilith also described knowing him as "unfortunate" and saying that he always got special treatment for being the "genius teen prodigy".

In "Watching and Dreaming", however, Hunter and Lilith are shown to be on much better terms, having become friends with one another in the four years since Belos' defeat. During Luz's 18th birthday, the two were shown to enjoy each other's company when Hunter and Willow visited her as she was renovating the Bonesborough Library, before flying alongside one another to Alador's research site, and later working on and celebrating at Luz's "King-ceañera" party together. Though neither of them currently know it, Hunter and Lilith are also distantly related due to Hunter being the clone of her human ancestor Caleb Wittebane.[22]Eda is shown to be annoyed at Hunter and shows a clear dislike for him after he defeats her and Luz in "Separate Tides", and he threatens to drown King in the Boiling Sea, if she or Luz doesn't kill the Selkidomus on his behalf.

In "Eclipse Lake", Eda recognizes his voice even though he wears a Coven Scout disguise. Later, she gets angry at Hunter for doubting her ability to turn into a Harpy.

Despite not interacting following his immediate return to the Demon Realm, in "For the Future", Hunter's opinion of Eda was shown to have greatly improved, coming to consider her an ally and showing concern for her wellbeing. This was shown when he referred to Eda by her name, symbolizing how he no longer views her as an enemy, while also wishing to rescue her from the Collector's imprisonment. In the four years since Belos' final defeat, Hunter and Eda have since made peace with each other and become good friends. During Luz's 18th birthday, both worked together in organizing Luz's "King-ceañera" before celebrating together in gratitude for Luz had done for them both. Though neither are currently aware of it, he and Eda are, in truth, related due to Hunter being the clone of her human ancestor Caleb WittebaneKikimora and Hunter are rivals. She appears to be jealous of the Golden Guard, thinking Emperor Belos favors him over her. In "Hunting Palismen", she sabotages Hunter's mission and attempts to kill him. She thinks she succeeded, and is surprised to bump into him still alive later. The two appear to be at odds with each other, both trying to prove that they're useful for Emperor Belos. Later, in "Eclipse Lake", Kikimora tries to find Titan's Blood as fast as possible, constantly paranoid about Hunter ruining her plans and stealing her work in the mine tunnels.

She later attempts to kidnap him after her demotion to give to Belos, believing that this will return her to her previous position or perhaps even cause her to become the Emporer's new right-hand.

Hunter is Emperor Belos' latest Golden Guard creation. As the previous Golden Guard had fallen or turned against Belos in some way, Belos lied to Hunter that he is his only surviving family after an incident that involved wild magic. Belos was the one who mentored Hunter, giving him a staff with artificial magic at some point in time. This eventually leads to Hunter becoming Emperor Belos' right-hand man, and the boy being chosen as Lilith's replacement as Head of the Emperor's Coven.

They are shown to have a complicated and abusive relationship, as Emperor Belos aggressively clutches the boy's shoulder in "Hunting Palismen", and later misses hitting Hunter's cheek by a tendril, after Hunter fails his mission to capture palismen and speaks of healing Emperor Belos' curse with wild magic. It appears as though the Emperor set a fear of wild magic into Hunter, as he is wary of Flapjack when the cardinal palisman touches him. In "Eclipse Lake", Emperor Belos implies that Hunter's failure from the events of "Hunting Palismen" is the reason he switched Hunter with Kikimora to gather Titan's Blood. This makes Hunter believe he is going to be replaced, and he tries to get to Eclipse Lake before Kikimora. He succeeds in getting there, but finds that the lake has dried out. This causes him to have a mental breakdown, as he thinks he has failed again, and starts digging his own grave. Though Emperor Belos was somewhat familiarly attached to Hunter, the genuineness of this relationship is, in fact, a pretense Belos puts in order to keep Hunter devoted to him.

After Luz inadvertently traps the two in Belos' mind, Hunter is forced to acknowledge the negative aspects of Belos. Upon facing Inner Belos, Hunter realizes he was simply a pawn for Belos' plans and learns he is a grimwalker. After exiting Belos' mind, Hunter runs away in a panic.

When facing Belos during the Day of Unity, Belos tries to manipulate Hunter to stop fighting to no avail. After Belos takes control of his body and wounds Flapjack, Hunter regains control and finally stands up to Belos, attempting to end his reign of terror by drowning the both of them. From then on, Hunter began obsessively trying to get his friends to track down Belos as soon as they returned to the Demon RealmFour years after Belos is defeated, Hunter takes up palisman carving under the tutelage of Dell Clawthorne and the Bat Queen. During the four year period, Hunter received a new blue jay palisman named Waffle.

On the day of Luz's belated quinceañera, Hunter meets up with Willow and together they fly to gather the rest of their friends. They stop at the new Latissa Hospital, and after meeting with Darius, go to the location of Luz's quinceañera. As they watch the Collector put on a light show, Hunter places his arm around Willow's shoulder and she pulls him in by his waist.[17]

Suddenly, the platform they are on begins to shake and he, Camila, Amity, Gus, and Willow are separated from Luz and turned into puppets. He, Amity, Willow, and Gus' puppets are used to torment Luz in a dream, manipulated into blaming her for everything. However, Luz snaps them out of it and they are brought to the Archive House.

Watching and Dreaming - 1870
Hunter and the others in the Archives.
After being placed in the Archives, Amity manages to move and creates a light glyph to free her and the others. They look around to find everyone they know as puppets. After Luz sacrifices herself, they watch as Camila return to normal. As Belos possesses the Titan, he and the other teenagers try and fail to utilize their magic as they are exhausted and Camila gives them a pep talk.

Watching and Dreaming - 3685
Hunter using glyphs to save Emmiline Bailey Marcostimo from falling.
After Luz is resurrected and fights Belos with King and Eda, he, Willow, Gus, and Amity use glyphs drawn by Camila to save the puppets. As the Archive House starts to fall, they watch in amazement as the Collector helps hold it in place.

Watching and Dreaming - 4639
Hunter reuniting with Darius and Eberwolf.
When Belos is defeated, Hunter and his companions thank the Collector for helping and they work with him to revert the citizens of the Boiling Isles back to normal. He helps Willow find her dads and looks on in sadness as the three share a happy moment. However, Hunter is soon greeted by Darius and Eberwolf and he happily tells the two about his time in the Human Realm.Shortly before Halloween, he and the others are in the Old House learning Spanish when Amity says they should do more. Thinking she meant help more around the house, he offers to patch up clothes. Amity clarifies by suggesting they search the town while Luz is at school. Soon, Amity trips after her foot falls through the floor where Flapjack was pecking, and she finds a box with a map with pictures in it. The group decides to keep it from Luz until they can decipher it.After Camila Noceda welcomes him and the others into her home, he talks privately with Luz, and they discuss how the others would react upon learning their secrets. After filling Camila in on what happened in the Demon Realm, she allows them to stay as long as they need. He and Gus stay in the basement while the girls stay in Luz's room. As the days turn into weeks, he and the others attempt to create a portal, however, all their attempts end up in failure. Privately, Hunter conducts research into the witch hunting history of Gravesfield. One day, he looks at himself in the mirror and is startled because of his shoulder length hair, with it reminding him of both the man he is a clone of and Belos. Willow finds him cutting his hair in the bathroom and neatens it up for him. Hunter also learns how to use a sewing machine. He would notice Flapjack pecking around the floor of the Old House, but he would not tell Hunter what he was looking for. However, Gus creates an illusion to make Hunter and Luz take on each others' appearance and she grabs Luz instead. After Alador destroys the factory and Odalia leaves, he and the others head to Kikimora's airship where the illusion wears off and Gus reveals Luz told him to mask her as Hunter. They soon realize Luz intends to fight Belos on her own.[21]He, King, and the other teenagers fly to the head where they disable the Abomatons by the Coven Heads and he checks on Darius. They fly to Luz, who is fighting Belos, and help her. When Belos sees him, he pleads with Hunter to not attack him, but becomes enraged upon seeing Flapjack. As the five are about to be killed, they are saved by the Collector, who smashes Belos against a wall, to Hunter's shock. As the Collector approaches them, King arrives and informs them that the Collector wants to play Owl House and the group plays along. After the Collector ends the eclipse, Hunter regains his strength and watches as the Collector reconstructs the skull. As they fly to the Head, he starts fiddling with the controls, much to the annoyance of Alador. The two soon get into a fight and Gus and Amity start to argue with them as well. The palismen give them a crate of food and they take a snack break. As they eat, Alador lets him take the controls. When the eclipse starts, Hunter and Alador notice that their sigils are glowing, concerning them both. As they get close to their destination, they are approached by Coven Scouts who say their ship is stolen. Hunter, Willow, and Amity fight off the scouts, during which Hunter falls off Flapjack, but is saved by Willow. Despite the kids' efforts, their ship is shot down. After they crash, he and Alador are affected further by the Draining Spell. He helps Willow up as Alador fends off a hoard of Abomatons. They soon realize Luz intends to fight Belos on her own.[21]Darius tasks him with aiding Luz and King in freeing the three Blight siblings and he has Gus and Willow join them. As Luz is about to say what he is, he interrupts her and pulls her aside to say he has yet to tell them he is a grimwalker and does not walk to. After fighting off the guards and liberating the Blight children, they head to the factory. Emira and Edric break away as Gus disguises them as Coven Scouts with King leaving as well. However, Kikimora, who is there picking up Abomatons and is given a new model Abomatron by Odalia, recognizes his voice and the group is soon captured. The five are soon freed by Alador, who was told about the Draining Spell by King. After Odalia reveals she knows about the spell but does not care, a fight breaks out as Kikimora tries to take him.Hunter wakes up in the Healing Homeroom and tells the others Adrian has Gus. However, most are not trustful of him and suggest trading him for Gus, however, Willow vouches for him after he mentions a breathing exercise. He and the students and staff of Hexside fight the Emperor's Coven and he speaks to Gus after he creates a sphere that traps Adrian and a few scouts in their worst memories and gets Gus to dispel it. After the Emperor's Coven and Adrian leave, he informs the students and staff of the Draining Spell.[8]As they walk, Gus questions why Hunter is helping him. Hunter begins to respond, but they run into Coven Scouts. The scouts restrain Gus and they tell him Belos has been worried sick about him and offer to escort him back to the palace. Gus draws a fire glyph and they escape. Once he and Gus are safe, Hunter experiences a panic attack triggered by the knowledge that Belos knows where he is, but Gus calms him down by showing him a breathing exercise. After escaping the illusion, they run into Willow, but Hunter realizes it is fake and Adrian appears with more scouts. Adrian orders the scouts to takes care of Hunter and they knock him out.

After learning what he is, Hunter camps out at Hexside, collecting books on grimwalkers and having Flapjack find food for him. After a few days, he is discovered by Gus. After seeing his poor living conditions, Gus gives Hunter his sandwich as Principal Bump calls an assembly when Adrian Graye Vernworth, the head of the illusion coven, delivers a decree that all witches must be placed in a coven before the Day of Unity. When Adrian reveals he is going to force the students into covens, Gus unintentionally creates a school wide illusion and Hunter arrives and drags Gus away.Soon, they see Belos rebuilding the portal and watch Hunter give Belos the key. After Hunter leaves, he is surprised to learn that Belos has destroyed the other Golden Guards. After exiting the painting, the child arrives and the three stop the mysterious figure stalking them. Soon, the boy takes the form of Belos, and reveals the creature is made of palisman essence he absorbed. He reveals Hunter to be a grimwalker made from an old companion and pulls him into the ground. However, Hunter escapes and he and Luz get out of Belos' mind. Upon exiting, Hunter starts to panic, rips off his cape, and runs away from the Owl House.[7]A week before the Day of Unity, Hunter is scouting out Bonesborough when he sees three figures trying to enter his uncle's mind. However, they flee when he shouts. After Luz finds him, she steps on a potion and they two end up in Belos' mind. He reprimands Luz for her actions before noticing the paintings. Soon, they see a small child in a mask crying in a corner. As Luz talks to the boy, a large figures approaches them and they flee. They fall through a painting and find themselves in a forest of dead trees with memory paintings on them. Hunter and Luz explore the painting to find Belos preaching to a crowd how the Titan I desired them to have controlled magic as explosions occur. As Hunter takes notice of the good Belos has two extra, they see him reprimanding a Golden Guard for nearly killing him and instructs him to blow up the town with the explosives. In another painting they see Belos tell lathe survivors of a destroyed town that wild magic is to blame. He and Luz watch as nine witches and demons are branded with and fall into a catatonic state. Hunter desperately continues to defend Belos despite being shocked by this scene.Hunter renounces his title, but Darius admits that the Emperor's Coven has enough recruits as it is, and that he was just going to return the children to Hexside. He then patches up the sigil on Hunter's cloak, noting that he needs sewing lessons, and helps him set up an account on Penstagram.[13]After helping their team win a match of flyer derby, Hunter comes up with the team name, "The Emerald Entrails" Because “They’re green and there is more to us than you think”. However, he then reveals his true intentions, and the "recruits" are taken to a holding cell before Darius picks them up. Hunter soon regrets his actions, and stops Darius from taking the team away.Feeling undeserving of the title of "Golden Guard" after Darius tells Hunter about his predecessor, saying that they were a powerful witch, Hunter goes to Hexside in search of new recruits for the Emperor's Coven. There, he meets Willow and, after some hesitation, decides to join her flyer derby team, consisting of Himself, Willow, Gus Porter, Viney, and Skara.Hunter seems to be willing to take Amity up on her offer to go with her, but upon seeing the portal key on Amity's neck, he quickly turns on her and tries to grab the key off her. A fight ensues, with Hunter (with the help of Flapjack as his palisman) fighting both Amity and King in an effort to get the key. Hunter and Amity eventually stalemate each other, and he manipulates her into giving him the key by saying that he knew where to find both her and Luz. However, Hunter seems to show some degree of remorse about this before leaving. On his way back to the Emperor's Castle, Hunter bonds with Flapjack, thanking him for never leaving his side and even now being able to understand what his palisman is saying.[11] He returns to the palace and gives the key to Belos, who promptly tells him to leave.[7]Hunter cooperates with them and even helps guide them to Eclipse Lake. However, when Hunter convinces Amity to untie him due to Kikimora having found them, he turns on Amity, kicking her legs out from under her and leaving her to be captured by the Emperor's Coven while he runs off to get the Titan's Blood before anyone else can. Amity later finds Hunter in the middle of the dried up Eclipse Lake, visibly exhausted from having fought his way through Kikimora and her guards and having a breakdown due to having found no Titan's Blood for Belos. Hunter begins digging a hole which he refers to as his "grave" before lying down in it. Amity attempts to console the distraught Golden Guard, telling him that he too can find people that care about him for who he is, rather than what they want from him, like she did.Originally, Hunter is tasked by the Emperor to find Titan's Blood for his next mission, but Belos opts to replace his nephew with Kikimora. Wanting to prove himself to his uncle, Hunter decides to go find Titan's Blood despite Belos' orders. Disguising himself as a regular member of the Emperor's Coven, Hunter attempts to sneak past Kikimora's expedition group to get to Eclipse Lake, but is caught by Eda, Amity, and King, who are also searching for Titan's Blood. After realizing Hunter's identity on account of his "annoying voice", Eda and Amity capture him and tie him up.Later, at the Emperor's Castle, Belos berates Hunter for failing to retrieve the palismen. Hunter responds that if he knew more about wild magic and how it cursed his uncle, he could potentially find a cure. This causes Belos to lash out and just barely miss hitting him with a sharp tendril. The Emperor, however, forgives Hunter, as he knows that he can do better. Hunter returns to his room to find that Flapjack has chosen him to be its wielder. Hunter is hesitant, knowing that it is dangerous for the palisman, but Hunter accepts him as his new staff.[12]Soon, Kikimora is on the move and Luz returns the Golden Guard's staff before activating the glyph combo. The plan is successfully executed, but Luz forgets one crucial detail. She forgets that the Golden Guard has to take the palismen to the Emperor, and he prepares to double-cross her now that the staff is back in his possession. Luz criticizes him for what he is willing to do to the palismen for the sake of the Emperor, and acknowledges that the Golden Guard is not a friend, but an enemy. Visibly hurt, the Golden Guard lowers his staff and reveals his name, "Hunter". Immediately after this, Kikimora attacks him. Due to the sleeping smoke, she cannot see Hunter very clearly. The two fight, with Kikimora managing to set fire to a strand of Hunter's hair. He easily defeats her and sees Luz leave with the palismen.Luz comes up with a plan to get the palismen away from Kikimora while en-route to the Emperor's Castle. Using a fire and ice glyph combination, she can conjure up a thick mist, combined with pollen from sleeping nettle flowers that will create a sleeping-induced smoke, forcing Kikimora and her dragon to land. The Golden Guard is impressed by Luz's knowledge and compares Luz's glyph magic to the elemental magic once used during the Savage Ages. Just as he is about to talk about his knowledge of wild magic, the Golden Guard stops himself, knowing that such magic is restricted by the Emperor. Luz then asks why the Golden Guard wanted to join the Emperor's Coven, and he reveals to her that he's a powerless witch who was taken in by the Emperor and had his entire future planned out. Luz muses that the Golden Guard had his future planned for him, but he is envious of her freedom and ability to decide her own future. During this time, Flapjack, a cardinal palisman, takes interest in the Golden Guard, but the guard is apprehensive and sees the creature as dangerous due to the fact that it is made of wild magic. The resulting crash leaves the Golden Guard unmasked, unconscious, and vulnerable, but Luz is unable to leave him to die at Kikimora's hands and subsequently slaps the guard awake. Even though he does not fully trust the human, the Golden Guard leaves his cloak as bait for the dragon while he and Luz escape to Latissa. He immediately storms over to one of Latissa's police precincts to contact the castle and shows his coven brand as proof. However, the guards running the precinct do not recognize their superior due to his young age, and when the Golden Guard asks for his staff in order to prove his identity, Luz hides it behind her back. Annoyed, the Golden Guard chases Luz through Latissa, and while she manages to elude him by using an ice pillar, the Golden Guard easily manages to climb up and corners her. Luz may have had the advantage now that she was armed with a staff, but the Golden Guard points out that no matter what she does, it won't end well for her; she won't attack him because she's too nice, and she can't fly away either because then she'd be leaving the rest of the palismen behind. However, neither Luz nor the Golden Guard want Kikimora to return to the palace with the palismen, and the two form a truce. While showing the nine Coven Heads a vision of the Day of Unity, a coughing fit overtakes Emperor Belos, and the Golden Guard escorts the Emperor back to his throne room. Kikimora attempts to follow, but the Golden Guard assures her that he can handle it alone. He prepares a palisman for his uncle, but the Emperor demands more. However, with palistrom wood becoming an increasingly rare resource, palismen are becoming much more difficult to come by, and while the Golden Guard suggests a method of using wild magic, Belos refuses to entertain that notion. Instead, he is ordered to find more.

Luckily for the Golden Guard, Hexside is holding a palisman adoption day, and in the middle of the night, he uses his ship to steal the palismen, not knowing that Luz is among them. While the Golden Guard is distracted with flying his ship, Luz manages to slap a fire glyph on his back and send him flying off uncontrollably. Though he manages to get back on the ship with his staff and even restrain Luz, the human uses the grime on the ship's floor to draw an ice glyph, and the resulting icicles knock the staff away. To make matters worse, a dragon attacks, causing the ship to crash-land near Latissa. After the unveiling of the Abomaton 2.0 during a Blight Industries presentation, the Golden Guard approaches Odalia and Alador Blight. He is impressed with the Abomaton's performance and announces that Emperor Belos will personally purchase all the Abomatons and fund for further research and development. Though Odalia is honored to have her products recognized, the Golden Guard warns the Blights that the Emperor does not like citizens building their own private armies.[20]The Golden Guard is tasked by the emperor himself to slay the Selkidomus, and a bounty is placed on Greg's List. At the time it was posted, the bounty for the Selkidomus had the highest pay and drew various bounty-hunters to the emperor-affiliated Captain Salty. The Golden Guard witnessed Luz accept the bounty and boarded the ship, and he stayed within the captain's quarters until he found King wandering in. After Eda robs the ship of its snails and Luz pursues the burglar, the Golden Guard finds the two on the island where the Selkidomus resides. Both Luz and Eda attempt to fight him, but he easily overpowers them both with his staff. The Golden Guard then offers a compromise to the two criminals; they either kill the beast, or he drowns King in the Boiling Sea. The two successfully kill a decoy Selkidomus, and the Golden Guard returns King to them as promised. However, he warns both Eda and Luz that the emperor is not a merciful man before leaving.[10]

The Golden Guard is tasked by the emperor himself to slay the Selkidomus, and a bounty is placed on Greg's List. The two successfully kill a decoy Selkidomus, and the Golden Guard returns King to them as promised. However, he warns both Eda and Luz that the emperor is not a merciful man before leaving.[10]Hunter was allegedly trained as a scout for as long as he could remember. Hunter's life was mostly sheltered, as he was made to train and study much of the time and was not allowed to train with the other scouts, although he was permitted to leave the Emperor's Castle during the weekdays for missions.[9] When Hunter came of age, he was promoted to the rank to Golden Guard, inheriting a staff imbued with artificial magic as part of his graduation.[7] Since then, Hunter worked under the emperor as the current Golden Guard, serving as the emperor's right-hand man.[10] Hunter can be seen standing next to Emperor Belos' throne when the latter lectured Lilith.[18] After Lilith defected from the Emperor's Coven, Hunter subsumed leadership of the Emperor's Coven.[10] He was also tasked with keeping an eye on the Owl House and its residents.[19]Hunter was created with a bone from Caleb Wittebane, and is the latest in a line of clones known as grimwalkers—artificial beings who take the mantle of the Golden Guard in order to assist their creator, Emperor Belos—in his plans to enact the Day of Unity. To ensure Hunter did not rebel like the other Guards did, Emperor Belos presented himself as Hunter's uncle, claiming that he took him under his wing after wild magic wiped out their family, and that the Titan had big plans for him.[12][7] Hunter grew up unaware of the fate of his predecessors and his true nature. Despite being raised to believe he was a witch, he was unable to cast magic; the false reason given was he was from a family of powerless witches.[12]Hunter

More
You know what I'd like, Belos? I'd like to leave the Emperor's Coven, and never step foot in that throne room again. I'd like to study wild magic, and learn how to carve palismen. I'd like to attend Hexside as a regular student, and play flyer derby with my friends. But most of all, I'd like to make sure you never... hurt anyone... again!

Hunter, formerly known as the Golden Guard, is a major character of The Owl House, initially depicted as an antagonist. He was the right-hand man of Emperor Belos and the former head of the Emperor's Coven when the Golden Guard. Hunter was presumed to be the nephew of Belos and, as such, was dedicated to his cause of ending all wild magic in the realm, but in reality, he is the latest version of the Golden Guard grimwalkers created by Belos to serve him faithfully in his mad quest to end all life in the Boiling Isles.[7]

After his promotion to head of the Emperor's Coven, the Golden Guard acts as the main enforcer for Emperor Belos and antagonist to the residents of the Owl House. There, he finds acquaintances in Hexside's students, and after coming to terms with his identity, Hunter makes it his goal to help them stand against Belos' plan to wipe out the Demon Realm.[8]

Following the events of the Day of Unity and the unleashing of the Collector, Hunter, Luz, Willow, Gus, and Amity are stranded in the Human Realm and spend months working to return to the Demon Realm. Belos, weakened but not dead, returns to the Demon Realm, and Hunter and his friends follow closely behind, vowing to honor his fallen palisman.[9] After the group escape capture by the Collector, Hunter helps evacuate the trapped residents from the Isles' destruction.

In the four years following Belos' final demise, Hunter becomes an accomplished palisman carver, and bonds to a new palisman, a blue jay named Waffle. He remains close to his friends and commemorates Flapjack, whom he builds a memorial for.

Body
Hunter, like the many Golden Guards before him, was created with the likeness of Belos' late older brother, Caleb Wittebane, and Inner Belos states he is the closest to his likeness of any grimwalker Belos created.[7][9] He is a humanoid boy sharing the physical characteristics of a witch, such as pointed ears. He has a fair complexion, a slightly hooked nose, dark magenta eyes, thick black eyebrows, a gap between his front teeth, bags under his eyes, and ash-blond hair that is shaved below the top, with a long, jagged forelock. He has a notch on his left ear and scars on his right cheek, upper left arm, two overlapping on his right kneecap (forming an X-shape), and one on his left calf. The sigil of the Emperor's Coven is branded onto his right wrist. He is described as scrawny by Amity in "Eclipse Lake", although he has a larger build compared to characters like Luz, possibly because he is slightly older than them.

He is described as looking sickly by Emira in "Labyrinth Runners", though this may have been a result of his living conditions at the time.

While staying in the Human Realm, Hunter had his hair and forelock trimmed by Willow, giving him short bangs. When Belos possessed him, parts of Hunter's skin, left ear, and face became basil-green that spread to his arms, turning them into the ones of Belos' corrupted form while also gaining the blue eyes and antler-like horns of the latter. His hair also grew longer, which restored his forelock bang. After being healed from Flapjack's sacrifice, Hunter received tissue scarring in the areas Belos corrupted and his eyes became brown.

In the epilogue of "Watching and Dreaming", Hunter's hair has grown out slightly further, and he no longer has bags under his eyes. Additionally, a red tattoo of a cardinal resembling Flapjack covers the place on his right wrist where his coven sigil had previously been to symbolize the loss and memory of Flapjack.

Clothing
During his time in the emperor's court, Hunter wore an ivory-colored hooded cloak with a golden triangle clasp, like other members of the Emperor's Coven. Under the cloak was a dark yellow long-sleeved tunic with a golden-yellow short-sleeved shirt over it and a dark brown belt, black leggings, dark brown gloves, and boots. He wore a golden pauldron on his left shoulder and a pointed two-faceted mask with a thin eye-slot across it. Underneath his tunic, he had a blueish-gray shirt and golden chest armor with brown straps.

In "Eclipse Lake", he disguised himself in a standard Coven Scout uniform during his excursion to the Knee.

In "Any Sport in a Storm", Hunter disguises himself as a Hexside student, donning a Hexside school uniform consisting of a gray tunic with a dark gray belt, cowl, and boots. His sleeves and leggings of his uniform are colored yellow to suggest he is affiliated with the Potions track. Part of his Golden Guard tunic can be seen hidden underneath his uniform, seen notably at the collar. Hunter also wore red socks with bird-like designs on them.

While hiding from the Emperor's Coven in "Labyrinth Runners", Hunter gets rid of his tunic and dons the shirts of his sports uniform again, albeit tattered and dirty, alongside a dark blue cloak with red patches.

After joining with the resistance in "Clouds on the Horizon", Hunter wears a pale rose-colored undershirt covered by a collared light brown shirt bearing a cross-stitch in the center, as well as a brown belt bag. He keeps the same gloves, leggings, and boots from his Golden Guard uniform.

Over the course of his stay in the Human Realm, Hunter typically wore a variety of short-sleeved button-down shirts, khaki shorts, no show socks and white crocs. By late October, he wears a yellow sweater with a left breast pocket, alternating his pants between blue jeans with a blue patch and red patch on the right and left knees, respectively, or blue pajama pants with a watermelon pattern. He wears either white or purple socks, along with red and white sneakers or his crocs for footwear.

During the Haunted Hayride, Hunter dressed as "Chief O'Bailey" from Cosmic Frontier, with the costume consisting of a black and yellow long-sleeved shirt with a planet symbol on it, a utility belt, black pants with cuffs and yellow edges, white socks, black and dark yellow shoes, and a robotic eye attachment. However, after being possessed by Belos and returning to the Demon Realm, he discards the robotic eye and removes the shirt part of his costume, tying it around his waist, revealing a custom-made black wolf t-shirt underneath it.

In the epilogue of "Watching and Dreaming", Hunter wears a dark blue collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up, light brown pants, an orange apron, and red sneakers with yellow lighting patterns across them. The apron features two pockets, one smaller on the torso and one larger at the waist, along with multiple sewn-on patches; a purple patch with the abomination symbol, a light blue patch with the illusionist symbol, and a yellow patch with the logo of the Emerald Entrails.Body
