In the comics, Jean Gray is an Omega-Level mutant telepath and telekinetic and one of the original X-Men. She was first introduced with the codename Marvel Girl but later assumed the identity of Phoenix after bonding with the Phoenix Force. Gray is also the wife of X-Men leader Cyclops and a lover of Wolverine.

Expert Tactician: In her quest to find her sister, Jean has transformed into a master tactician, harnessing her advanced telepathic abilities to manipulate others and gain strategic advantages. By mastering the art of mind-jumping, she can momentarily inhabit the bodies of others, allowing her to communicate with them and gather crucial information. Initially, Spider-Man was the only one immune to her powers, but this vulnerability led her to the body of Scorpion, where she strategically placed an explosive device. This distraction gave the mutant the opportunity to escape into a helicopter. During their second encounter, Gray successfully tracked Peter to his apartment. She controlled people nearby on the outside to find his note to his loved ones, which revealed their locations. This information enabled Spider-Man to catch up to Grey, who had somehow managed to take possession of Michelle Jones' body in order to bribe Parker and bringing her to safety long enough for Jean to arrive at Damage control, headquarters to bring the Hulk before Peter caught up.

Combatant: Through the use of controlling the bodies of enthralls, she can fight in close quarter combat as possession over Scorpion, allowing her to throw a few strikes with her mechanical tail against Spider-Man.

Marksman: During her encounters with armed forces, she uses her possession ability to control her enthralls to fire projectiles with accurate aim.

Telekinesis: After learning her sister's fate, Grey's rage unlocked very powerful telekinetic abilities. She is able to move, manipulate and impel objects and matter with high precision. She telekinetically freed herself from restraints, shattered glass and propelled shards, generated a massive telekinetic wave across the city, and sustained Spider-Man's critically wounded body after he took a sniper bullet meant for her, keeping her functions going until medical help arrived.

Psionic Blasts: Gray can project a powerful "mental blast" that can hit the target mentally or leave them unconscious. For offensive purposes, she can overwhelm the minds of her enemies and severely disorient and cripple them.

Mind Possession: Gray can enter and control other people's minds and bodies, seeing through their eyes, speaking through their mouths, and directing their actions while the host experiences a temporary blackout. She can jump into any person's mind as long as they are within a 33-foot radius and she can chain another jump from that subject. With rapid jumps, she can move from person-to-person to cover great distances. How far that hijacked suspect can travel from Grey's current position is unknown. During her campaign against Damage Control, she hijacked Scorpion, Bruce Banner, and the Punisher, alongside numerous unsuspecting civilians. If her subject is hit with enough force, Gray could be knocked out of their body and would feel any pain they experience, as demonstrated when the Punisher's bombs hit a hijacked Banner with enough force to kick Gray out of his mind and give her a concussion. After her powers expand, she placed everyone within a one-kilometer radius under her psychic control and was able to control multiple people at once, such as members of the Hand, who moved in perfect unison against Spider-Man.

Mutant Physiology: As a mutant, Gray possesses a unique genetic structure different from normal humans, granting her extraordinary abilities. Her specific mutation grants her powerful psychic abilities, such as telepathy and telekinesis.

Telepathy: Gray is able to read and communicate with people's minds, detect their intentions, emotions, mental states, and project their own thoughts. She can speak telepathically through others and receive messages, such as the one from her sister Sara about “V-Max.” She read Peter Parker's private letter to MJ, learned his name and identity, and later entered his mind to experience a memory of Aunt May.

Mental Manipulation: Gray is able to control the thoughts and actions of others across great distances. After unlocking greater power, she projected a massive telepathic shockwave that mentally froze thousands of New Yorkers in place within a one-kilometer radius of the Roosevelt Island facility and maintained a psychic connection to keep Spider-Man's body functioning after he is critically wounded.

Gray disappeared after Frank Castle retrieved Peter Parker from Roosevelt Island and brought him to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. As Parker underwent surgery, Gray continued using his telekinetic abilities to sustain his breathing from afar, ultimately keeping him alive until the operation was complete. After Parker regained consciousness, Castle informed him of Grey's actions. Guiltridden, Gray left New York City aboard a bus, departing for an unknown destination.[1]

As she prepared to exact her revenge, she continued taunting Spider-Man, her faith in humanity having deteriorated completely. She came to see people like Metzger as threats to those like herself, Sara, and even Spider-Man - people whom she believed would always be exploited or discarded by the world around them for their differences. Spider-Man, however, refused to be swayed. After Gray coldly reminded him that his former life was gone and urged him to be honest with himself, he embraced both sides of his identity and defeated the Hand.

Spider-Man then broke into the room where Gray was holding Metzger hostage. She warned him to stay back lest he wants her to harm Metzger and the other people she had immobilized with her telekinesis. When Gray threatened to enter Spider-Man's mind, however, he willingly allowed her to do so. Within Parker's mind, Gray witnessed his memories of Aunt May, including the moments following her discovery of his secret identity. To Grey's surprise, she soon found herself face-to-face with May, who welcomed her without judgment and embraced her.

Moved by the encounter and the profound grief she shared with Parker, Gray admitted that she felt completely alone now that Sara was gone. Parker reassured her that she was not alone, insisting that he would be there for her. Before Gray could respond, Castle attempted to stop her from incapacitating the rest of New York City by firing a sniper rifle at her from a distance. Sensing the incoming shot, Parker pulled Gray out of his mind to take the bullet himself. As her telekinetic field dissapeared, Gray used her powers to sustain his life while a bleeding Parker urged her to escape.[1]

Unaffected by Grey's telepathic assault, Spider-Man infiltrated the facility's prison and attempted to reason with her, having realized that he had misunderstood her actions and that Bill Metzger had deceived him. Grey, however, remained furious over his constant interference and his role in helping imprison her. In retaliation, she possessed members of the Damage Control security forces and Hand ninjas, forcing them to attack and kill him. Meanwhile, Gray used her telekinesis to drag Metzger into the same chair in which she had been experimented upon.

Realizing that Sara had likely been subjected to the same experiments and that "V-Max" had been the final clue she had received from her sister, Gray concluded that Sara had been killed by the DODC's experimentation. Overwhelmed by grief and fury, Gray unleashed the full extent of his powers upon the DODC facility and across New York City. Her telepathic assault spread through the surrounding population, overwhelming the minds of countless civilians and leaving numerous inhabitants incapacitated.[1]

Desperate for answers, Gray demanded to know where her sister was, only for the bedroom to be revealed as part of a Damage Control facility. Metzger and the DODC scientists subsequently disabled the inhibitor and began recording, replicating, and testing the frequency of Grey's telepathic abilities. The experiment placed immense strain on her, leaving her increasingly exhausted and disoriented. In her weakened state, Gray noticed an air vent bearing a partially obscured label that read "Vent Max."

Gray dreamed of her last interaction with her sister before waking up in a bedroom with Bill Metzger. She immediately attempted to use her powers against him, only to find them suppressed by the inhibitor device. Metzger explained that her abilities had the potential to change the world and revealed his intention to extract them from her, just as he had attempted to do with Sara.

Punisher subsequently arrived to assist Spider-Man. Working together, they briefly incapacitated "Hulk," severing Grey's hold over Banner in the process. As to improvise, Gray possessed Castle instead, only to be shocked by the disturbing thoughts and memories she encountered within her mind. As Spider-Man battled the now-unrestrained Hulk, Gray used Castle to bomb the safe door and disable the guards protecting Metzger.

Just as Gray was about to kill Metzger, Spider-Man intervened and managed to attach his inhibitor device to his neck, suppressing his telepathic abilities. Metzger immediately followed by shooting her with a tranquilizer, leaving Gray barely conscious. As she succumbed to the sedative, she managed to utter Sara's name to Spider-Man before finally losing consciousness.[1]

While "Hulk" wreaked havoc, Gray searched for any information regarding V-Max, but found nothing. Spider-Man soon arrived with an inhibitor device of his own designed to counter his powers, but his attempt to use it was thwarted when "Hulk" intervened. Spider-Man warned Gray that Banner's transformation was unstable and that she was putting herself in danger, but she dismissed his warnings and attempted to destroy the device.

She possessed Doctor Bruce Banner, who had since become a professor and learned to suppress his Hulk form with an inhibitor device. Gray destroyed the device, forcing Banner to transform, and then used the Hulk to tear through the building. Inside Damage Control Headquarters, she attempted to use him to breach the reinforced safe door behind which Bill Metzger and his colleagues had taken refuge from her onslaught.

Enraged, Parker threatens Grey, who leapt from the building in response while still possessing Jones. At the last moment, Gray released his hold, leaving Spider-Man barely enough time to save Jones from the fall. Gray confronted him once more as another pedestrian, warning him to stay out of her way before returning the letter she had taken. Aware of the security measures surrounding the Damage Control Headquarters, Gray ordered a cab driver to take her to Empire State University in search of a more powerful host. As she left, Parker managed to capture a picture of her true face.[1]

Despite the setback, Gray eventually reached Jones and took possession of her before Spider-Man arrived to bring her somewhere safe. Using Jones' body, Gray pretends to recognize Spider-Man as Parker, even kissing him before abandoning the charade. She taunted him that the real Jones would never fall for such sentimental nonsense, emphasizing that Jones now possessed none of the memories or feelings she once shared with him.

Gray once again led Spider-Man on a frantic chase through the city, taunting him at every turn. After taking control of a helicopter pilot, she attempted to escape by air, but Parker had deduced the limitations of her possession ability. He webbed the helicopter to a nearby crane, effectively isolating its host and bringing the chase to an abrupt end.[1]

Moving from one pedestrian to another to continue taunting Spider-Man, Gray eventually came across a letter addressed to Michelle Jones. She learned of Parker's relationship with her and how he ended it. Using a post from Jones' roommate's social media, she traced their whereabouts. Gray challenged Parker to stop her before she could reach Jones, forcing her latest host to step directly into oncoming traffic.

Having discovered Spider-Man's identity as Peter Parker, Gray located his address and broke into his apartment, rifling through his belongings in search of something she could use against him. Taking control of a pedestrian, she eventually encountered Parker on a nearby sidewalk after one of his gadgets malfunctioned. She taunted him for being unable to detect her telepathic presence and questioned why he continued to side with Damage Control.

With Gargan's tail, Gray attacked Spider-Man trying to kill him. But Spider-Man suddenly lost control of himself, seized the possessed Gargan, and began pummeling him with brutal force, inadvertently injuring a nearby police officer in the process. Taken back by his sudden aggression, Gray mockingly asked Spider-Man if he even knew who he was after he angrily demanded to know his identity. She subsequently abandoned Gargan's body, while Spider-Man went to check on the injured officer before leaving the scene himself.[1]

Having possessed Scorpion, Gray infiltrated the Damage Control Data Center in search of information regarding V-Max. Before she could interrogate a guard, however, Spider-Man swung into the scene while struggling to control his mutating powers, which. Gray immediately noticed. The hero initially believed he was confronting Gargan before realizing that Gray had taken control of his body.

For her fourth attack, Gray possessed an elderly janitor in one of the DODC's many facilities, using her to hide an explosive inside a tank and hijack it. With the tank, she went on a rampage across New York, gaining the attention of both the Punisher and Spider-Man, who both separately gave chase. Gray crashed the tank into the Damage Control Detention Center, and mockingly greeted Spider-Man as he removed his thrall from inside the armored vehicle; with new targets in her thrall's vicinity, she hopped into different bodies to carry on with her plans. Spider-Man, however, was able to sense her abilities in use, and managed to follow her presence to the detention center's helipad.

Taking control of a guard escorting Mac Gargan to a transfer helicopter, Gray ordered the pilots to lead him to the rooftop of Bellevue Hospital instead of his original destination, the DODC Supermax Prison. As the vehicle took off, Spider-Man subdued her current thrall and started interrogating her. Seeing an opportunity to gain a more powerful thrall, Gray attempted to enter his mind, but could only see a glimpse of his memories before being repelled; with her curiosity piqued, Gray taunted a stunned Spider-Man for neglecting to investigate the tank as the explosive went off, and released her thrall after completing her mission.[1]

Angry and alone after her sister's capture, Gray received a telepathic message from Sara containing only the name "V-Max." Convinced that this message was a clue to Sara's whereabouts, Gray began launching attacks against Damage Control in an attempt to rescue Sara and uncover the meaning behind the message. In one month, she led three separate attacks against the organization.[1]

One day, while sitting in a park, Sara taught Jean how to leap between people's minds. As they practiced, the sisters spoke of their mother's abandonment, with Sara insisting that Elaine had never loved them in the way they needed, while Jean argued that she had until they changed. When Sara went to buy them both ice cream, she was approached and apprehended by Bill Metzger and agents of Damage Control, who promptly took her into custody. Horrified, Jean attempted to intervene, but Sara possessed her before she could act, compelling Jean to flee in order to keep her safe.[1]

Jean Gray and her older sister, Sara, were born to Elaine Grey. During their youth, the two developed powerful telepathic abilities, including the ability to possess the bodies of others at will. After discovering their unusual powers, however, their mother cast them out of their home, leaving the two sisters to fend for themselves.[1]

Jean Elaine Gray is a powerful psychic mutant whose older sister and fellow telepath Sara Gray was captured by the United States Department of Damage Control, motivating her to begin a series of attacks on the organization to find and free her sister, primarily using her power to possess people. This drew the attention of Spider-Man, whom Gray antagonized and who assisted Damage Control in apprehending her, unaware of her true intentions. She was experimented on by Bill Metzger at the Damage Control Detention Center, where, upon learning that Sara died during similar experiments, she discovered even stronger telekinetic abilities in destructive rage and nearly killed Metzger as revenge. However, the advice of Spider-Man, who learned the truth about her past, and a memory Gray saw of his aunt May Parker convinced her otherwise, and she telekinetically helped Spider-Man recover from a gunshot wound he inadvertently sustained from the Punisher while protecting her from his assassination attempt, before departing New York City.
