When performing a spin dash, he curls into a ball and then accelerates for a dash, and when dashing, he attacks opponents and can roll on the ground.

Shadow was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik on the space colony ARK as part of the secret Project Shadow. The project's goal was to find a cure for the incurable disease (neuroimmunodeficiency syndrome, NIDS) that afflicted his granddaughter Maria.
To succeed, Gerald sought help from the Black Arms, an alien race native to the Black Comet. The Black Arms' leader, Black Doom, agreed to help, but set a condition: in exchange for his blood, Gerald had to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds when the comet approached Earth again.
Experiments with alien blood resulted in the creation of an anthropomorphic hedgehog-alien hybrid, Shadow. On the ARK colony, he befriended Maria, who became his only true friend.
Tragedy and false memories
However, the government deemed the project too dangerous and raided the ARC colony. GUN soldiers killed Maria in front of Shadow. Before she died, she managed to ask the hedgehog to protect people and give them a chance at happiness.
Shadow himself was captured and placed in a stasis pod. Gerald, driven mad by grief, secretly altered Shadow's memories, instilling in him the idea of ​​revenge against humanity for Maria's death.
Fifty years later, Shadow was freed by Doctor Eggman, Gerald's grandson. Initially driven by a thirst for revenge, his actions led to conflict with Sonic.
Revealing the truth
In Shadow the Hedgehog, an amnesiac Shadow begins to remember his past. He learns that he was created using Black Doom's DNA, who actually planned to use him to conquer Earth.
The key moment is Shadow's realization that his true mission is to protect people, as Maria requested. He defeats Black Doom and, using the Chaos Emeralds and the Eclipse Cannon, destroys the comet threatening the planet.

However, after the events surrounding Maria Robotnik (the granddaughter of his creator, Professor Gerald Robotnik) and the realization of the true goals of Project Shadow, Shadow's character changes. He becomes more reserved, but at the same time begins to act to protect people and fulfill Maria's final wish. He reciprocates respect: if he is treated well, he reciprocates. In a bad mood, he can be sarcastic. However, Shadow is especially polite to women and does not fight them unless they attack him.

Shadow is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with black fur covering most of his body. He has a patch of white fur on his chest. The quills on his head have red stripes: four of them curve upward, two curve downward. He also has red stripes on his arms, legs, and at the corners of his eyes.
