Karasuno — Their deepest struggles

Daichi Sawamura — The burden of responsibility

Daichi’s suffering is less personal and more about responsibility.

He’s the captain.

When the team loses control, he’s expected to stabilize them.

When younger players fight, he has to intervene.

When everyone gets emotional, he has to stay composed.

He doesn’t have the luxury of completely falling apart.

That’s what makes his position difficult:

Everyone can rely on Daichi—but who does Daichi rely on?

Sugawara and Asahi are especially important because they’re people he can share that burden with.

that’s what makes Karasuno special

Almost every Karasuno player has a different version of the same pain:

Hinata: “I’m not strong enough.”
Kageyama: “I pushed everyone away.”
Tsukishima: “I don’t want to care.”
Yamaguchi: “I’m not useful.”
Tanaka: “What if I can’t deliver?”
Nishinoya: “What if I can’t save it?”
Daichi: “Everyone depends on me.”
Sugawara: “What if I’m no longer needed?”
Asahi: “What if I let everyone down?”
Yachi: “What if I disappoint everyone?”

And volleyball becomes the place where they slowly confront those fears.

Karasuno — Their deepest struggles continue

Ryunosuke Tanaka — The fear of not being enough

Tanaka looks like the most confident person imaginable.

But underneath all that yelling and confidence, he’s capable of feeling crushing insecurity.

He can get blocked repeatedly.

He can make mistakes.

He can struggle while everyone expects him to score.

And yet he keeps demanding the ball.

His strength isn’t that he never feels afraid.

It’s that he keeps attacking even when he’s afraid.

Tanaka’s pride is basically:

“I can be scared and still step forward.”

⸻

Yu Nishinoya — Fear of failing the team

Nishinoya is usually pure confidence.

But as Karasuno’s libero, his role carries enormous responsibility.

When a powerful spike comes toward him, everyone expects him to save it.

And sometimes he can’t.

For someone who takes pride in being the team’s defensive guardian, failing to receive a ball can hit incredibly hard.

That’s why his determination is so intense.

He wants his teammates to feel:

“If the ball comes toward us, I’ll keep it alive.”

Karasuno — Their deepest struggles continue

Hitoka Yachi — Fear of disappointing people

Yachi is overwhelmed when she first joins Karasuno.

She’s constantly thinking:

“What if I’m not useful?”

She compares herself to Kiyoko and feels like she can’t possibly live up to her.

Her anxiety comes from wanting desperately to help while being afraid that she’ll make everything worse.

Her growth is about realizing:

You don’t have to be fearless to be useful.

You can be terrified and still take the next step.

Koshi Sugawara — Knowing he isn’t the best

Sugawara is one of the most emotionally mature players on the team, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt to lose his starting position.

Kageyama is younger than him.

And yet Kageyama is better.

Sugawara has spent years playing volleyball, only to watch someone younger take the position he wanted.

He could have become bitter.

Instead, he chooses to support Kageyama.

That’s painful because he still loves being a setter.

His sacrifice is essentially:

“I wanted to be on that court… but I still want my team to win.”

Karasuno — Their deepest struggles continue

Asahi Azumane — The fear of letting everyone down

Asahi’s appearance makes him look like someone who should be fearless.

But he’s actually very sensitive.

When Date Tech repeatedly blocks his attacks, he starts feeling like he’s failing everyone as Karasuno’s ace.

He eventually leaves the volleyball club because he believes:

“I’m not strong enough to be the ace.”

That’s devastating because the team needs him—but he doesn’t believe he deserves that role.

His return isn’t simply about becoming stronger.

It’s about accepting that being an ace doesn’t mean never failing.

⸻

Kiyoko Shimizu — Carrying responsibility quietly

Kiyoko doesn’t express her emotions easily.

She’s responsible for the team behind the scenes and takes her role seriously.

Her emotional development with Yachi is particularly meaningful because she learns to open herself up and let another person help her.

Her biggest strength is also her weakness:

She tends to carry things quietly instead of asking for help.

Karasuno — Their deepest struggles continue

Kei Tsukishima — Fear of caring

Tsukishima’s pain is much quieter.

When he was younger, he looked up to his older brother Akiteru and believed his brother was amazing at volleyball.

Then he discovered that his brother wasn’t actually the incredible volleyball player he had imagined.

Tsukishima felt betrayed.

He began thinking that becoming emotionally invested in something only gives it the power to hurt you.

So he protects himself by saying:

“It’s just a club.”

He pretends volleyball doesn’t matter.

His most emotional moment comes when he finally realizes that he actually cares.

For Tsukishima, that is terrifying—and freeing.

⸻

Tadashi Yamaguchi — Feeling useless

Yamaguchi’s biggest struggle is insecurity.

He’s surrounded by people who seem naturally talented:

Hinata’s athleticism.
Kageyama’s genius.
Tsukishima’s intelligence.
Nishinoya’s defense.
Asahi’s power.

And Yamaguchi wonders:

“What do I have?”

He hates the feeling of standing beside his friends while being unable to contribute at their level.

That’s why developing his jump float serve means so much.

It isn’t just a volleyball skill.

It’s proof that he can create his own strength instead of comparing himself to everyone else.

Karasuno — Their deepest struggles continue

Shoyo Hinata — Being left behind

Hinata’s deepest fear is probably not being good enough.

He started volleyball after seeing the Little Giant, believing that height didn’t have to determine who could play. But again and again, his lack of height becomes an obstacle.

What hurts him most isn’t simply losing. It’s watching people move ahead of him.

He sees players who are taller, stronger, more experienced, and more technically developed. Instead of giving up, he desperately tries to catch up.

That’s why his growth is so emotional: Hinata doesn’t just want to become strong.

He wants to prove that he belongs on the same court as everyone else.

⸻

Tobio Kageyama — Being alone because of his talent

Kageyama’s pain is almost the opposite of Hinata’s.

He had enormous talent, but he didn’t know how to connect with people.

At Kitagawa Daiichi, his obsession with making the perfect play caused his teammates to turn against him. He earned the nickname “King of the Court.”

The painful part is that Kageyama genuinely wanted to win.

He just didn’t understand that volleyball isn’t about one person’s idea of perfection.

His deepest struggle is learning:

Being the best doesn’t mean anything if nobody wants to play beside you.

Hinata becomes incredibly important to him because Hinata is one of the first people who can challenge him without abandoning him.

Hates: Losing, being called short, people telling him he can’t do something, and being unable to keep up with stronger players.

Loves: Strawberry shortcake, reading, analyzing opponents, quiet time, teasing people.
Hates: Being treated like a child, overly enthusiastic people, unnecessary noise, and admitting when he’s emotionally invested.

skills:

The Tactical Blocker

Position: Middle Blocker
