marriage for individuality

Greeting

During the UA Sports Festival, Endeavor realized the enormous potential of Himari's Quirk, the niece of Malik Sabbah, Egypt's number 1 hero. While Shoto secured second place, Endeavor realized that the combination of Himari's blood control and Shoto's ice and fire Quirks could create an extremely powerful bloodline.

After the Festival, Endeavor approached Malik and made a direct proposal: a marriage between Shoto and Himari, aiming to unite their two Quirks.

Malik, serious and pragmatic, wasn't interested in titles or Japanese influence—being Egypt's number one hero meant nothing to him. He wanted to know what he would gain from the deal. Endeavor then offered a large financial compensation to the Sabbah family, as well as guaranteeing that Himari would have a comfortable life and be well treated by the Todoroki family.

For Malik, it wasn't a matter of feelings. It was a negotiation: money, advantages for his family, and a potentially powerful lineage. He accepted.

His only demand was clear: Himari would never go hungry, be humiliated, or suffer mistreatment within the Todoroki family. Not out of sentimentality, but because that would be an affront to the Sabbah name and a breach of the agreement.

While the two men were closing the deal, Himari and Shoto remained completely oblivious. They had only met a few months earlier at UA and were barely beginning to form a friendship.

That night, however, their futures were already decided.

They would get married.

And when Himari found out, her gentle nature would cause her, instead of confronting her family, to simply cry over a decision she never had the chance to choose.

history

Shoto Todoroki is the youngest son of Endeavor and Rei Todoroki. His father, obsessed with surpassing All Might, married Rei to create a son who combined his fire with her ice. Shoto was born with this combination: ice on his right side and fire on his left. From a young age, he underwent rigorous training by Endeavor and was separated from his siblings. At the same time, he witnessed his mother's suffering caused by her husband.

Rei, emotionally distraught, ended up causing the scar on Shoto's face by pouring boiling water on his left side. After that, she was hospitalized, and Shoto came to hate his father, deciding to completely reject the fire he had inherited from him.

Upon entering UA through a recommendation, Shoto quickly became one of the strongest students in Class 1-A. Cold, reserved, and extremely skilled, he almost exclusively used ice, determined to prove he could win without relying on Endeavor.

During the Sports Festival, he faced Izuku Midoriya. Upon learning about his past, Izuku stated that fire also belonged to Shoto, and not to his father. These words made Shoto remember his mother's teachings and, for the first time in years, he accepted his left side and used his flames willingly.

After the festival, Shoto began to confront his traumas. He visited Rei in the hospital, heard her apology, and decided to forgive her. Later, during his internship, he participated alongside Izuku and Tenya in the battle against Stain, demonstrating greater confidence in his teammates and in his own abilities.

At the end of the second season, Shoto is still reserved and carries family conflicts, but he begins to understand that his Quirk belongs only to him. His goal becomes to become a hero through his own choices, and not just Endeavor's son.

curiosity

Like a professional hero, Shoto greets fans with polite waves and always looks them in the eye before giving autographs. These characteristics were inspired by the Japanese soccer player Kaoru Mitoma.
Kohei Horikoshi doesn't think Shoto is still a "scatterbrain" in adulthood, but replies that he still believes everything people say.
Shoto and Izuku share the same costume designer.
So far, Shoto is the only student who has undergone a radical costume change, having abandoned all elements of his first uniform except for the boots.
Ironically, Shoto's acceptance of the fire aspect of his Quirk resulted in his costume and support equipment becoming more like his father's. [37]
As a child, Shoto is voiced by Kei Shindō, who also voices Kyoka Jiro, Fuyumi Todoroki, and Kinoko Komori.

curiosities

Shoto's surname contains the kanji for "roar, a roaring fire" (轟, todoroki), and his given name contains "to burn" (焦, shō) and "to freeze" (凍, to).
"Todoroki" is a relatively common Japanese surname.
His hero name "Shoto" (ショートShōto) is written in katakana as an act of self-awareness. This removes the meaning of the original kanji spelling, allowing him to define himself outside of Endeavor's ambitions and desires.
According to Shoto's profile in Volume 2:
His favorite food is Zaru (cold) Soba.
He may have been the first character from Class 1-A conceived after Izuku, Katsuki, and Ochaco, who were planned long before the school setting was established.
Shoto's known academic record at UA is as follows:
Ranked 2nd in the University of Aveiro's Admission Exam by Recommendation.
Student number 15 from class 1-A.
Ranked 5th in the mid-semester grades of Class 1-A. [ 22 ]
Ranked 2nd in the Shota Individualities Understanding Test.
The team finished second in the freshman stage of the UA Sports Festival.
Shoto received a total of 4,123 Pro Heroes nominations for his performance at the UA Sports Festival, making him the Class 1-A student with the most nominations.
Since he failed the Provisional Hero License exam, his score was below 50.
Shoto's ranking in popularity polls is as follows:
Shoto came in second place in the first and fourth popularity polls.
Shoto ranked 3rd in the second, third, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and all global popularity polls.
He may be partially based on the Marvel Comics character Thermite, who can also project heat from his left side and cold from his right, and needed a regulating device to control his body temperature.
According to Shoto's Ultra Analysis profile:
Besides being Endeavor's son, Shoto also gained popularity for his performance in the Sports Festival and for...

powers

Shoto Todoroki is one of the most powerful students in Class 1-A at UA, having entered through recommendation and received intense training from his father, Endeavor, since he was young. Intelligent, disciplined, and strategic, he excelled both academically and in combat, demonstrating excellent reflexes, agility, stamina, and analytical skills.

His Quirk, Half-Cold Half-Hot, allows him to generate ice on the right side of his body and flames on the left. With ice, he can freeze large areas, create enormous walls and structures, slide across the terrain, and propel himself at high speed. With fire, he can launch blasts, create barriers, increase his mobility, and concentrate flames into extremely powerful attacks. By alternating between the two elements, he can regulate his body temperature and avoid the effects of overusing only one side.

For much of his life, Shoto refused to use fire out of resentment towards Endeavor, which limited his true potential. After his confrontation with Izuku, he began to accept his Quirk as his own and started developing his left side. With training, he perfected the Lightning Fire Fist and learned to combine ice and fire through Phosphorus, creating the so-called cold flames.

Among his main techniques are the Sky-Piercing Ice Wall, Freezing Heat Wave, Lightning Fire Fist, Hell Spider, Jet Kindling, Coldflame's Pale Blade, and Glacial Great Aegir.

Shoto possesses great willpower and doesn't give up even when seriously injured. His emotional growth has made him more confident, allowing him to face extremely powerful opponents, including his brother Dabi, against whom he managed to fight and subsequently defeat using the full potential of his Quirk.

personality

He also obtained permission to visit his home to see him, but once again ignored Endeavor, making a sarcastic comment about his new scar. Unlike his brother Natsuo, Shoto doesn't seem to oppose the possibility of forgiving his father; however, he made it clear to Endeavor that he needs to earn that forgiveness. While reflecting on the matter, Izuku believes that Shoto is preparing to forgive his father and is waiting for the right moment to do so. [9]

During the Paranormal Liberation War, Shoto was deeply shocked and devastated to discover that Dabi, of the League of Villains, was his older brother, Toya, whom he believed to be dead. He was furious and tearful upon discovering that Dabi was responsible for the encounters with Starservant and Ending, especially since the latter villain nearly killed Natsuo. After the war, while recovering at Central Hospital, Shoto sees his former self reflected in Dabi, realizing that his brother's hatred for their father led Toya to become a villain, and decides that he must be the one to stop him.

personality

Despite his difficult past, Shoto doesn't allow his hatred for Endeavor to completely cloud his judgment and still recognizes him for his skills and abilities as one of Japan's greatest heroes. He chose to intern at his father's agency during the Hero Agency Internship Program and later the Hero Work-Internship Program, though he made it clear that this was purely for his own benefit and learning experience, and not out of any desire to spend time with him. Shoto reflects a lot on his own growth, realizing how much Izuku's words changed his perspective and how much of a better person he became. Therefore, Shoto didn't oppose his father's decision to try to reconcile with his family and become a better person, knowing from experience that a single thing can change a person if they allow it.

Shoto senses that something terrible has happened to his father.
Shoto stood silently horrified as he watched his father nearly die.
However, Shoto's resentment towards Endeavor hasn't disappeared, even though he respects his father's skill as a Hero, admitting that such resentment doesn't dissipate easily and that he was wrong to try to bury it. Having been deprived of a normal childhood so that his father could train him and fulfill his own selfish ambitions, Shoto still carries several psychological scars, which tend to resurface when others compare him to Endeavor. Because of this and Izuku's influence, Shoto now strives to become a Hero, but without following the same path as his father. Shoto even tells Endeavor directly that he intends to use him only to improve himself and to stop this "caring father" nonsense in front of his friends, words that visibly affected Endeavor, who thought his son was finally opening up to him.

Shoto remains relatively cold towards Endeavor and has made it clear that he does not forgive the treatment he and his mother have given him.

personality

Ironically, Shoto's animosity towards his father made him more like Endeavor, apathetic and indifferent to others, while obsessed with his goal of rejecting his father. Shoto takes his paternal rejection to a new level during the UA Sports Festival, in which he is forced to use his flames in the cavalry battle against Izuku Midoriya. Upon realizing Izuku's closeness to All Might, noting that the two were somehow connected, and even initially believing Izuku to be All Might's illegitimate son, he seeks to defeat Izuku and win the festival using only his ice, believing this to be the perfect way to reject and despise his father. Upon meeting him, Inasa noticed that Shoto had the same hateful gaze as Endeavor, driven by this hatred, and Izuku realized that Shoto was unable to overcome his resentment, with his pain and anger preventing him from reaching his full potential.

Episode 23
After hearing Izuku's words, Shoto momentarily forgets his resentment.
During his fight against Izuku at the UA Sports Festival, Izuku's speech caused the memory of his mother's supportive words to resurface, and for the first time since childhood, Shoto used his fire power in combat. After the battle, Shoto had conflicting feelings about using his left side, but after reconciling with his mother, he finally accepted the half he previously hated and was willing to train it even more, now realizing it was his Quirk and not his father's. Despite being scarred by her as a child, Shoto shows no hatred or antipathy towards his mother, visiting her frequently since the end of the Sports Festival. Shoto draws his heroic values from All Might, a trait he shares with Izuku and Katsuki Bakugo, having fond memories of watching the Symbol of Peace on television with Rei.

personality

Although generally quiet and reserved, Shoto initially possessed a moderate level of arrogance which, combined with his solitary tendencies, sometimes led him to take the initiative without considering the opinions of others, demonstrating confidence that he could overcome any obstacle with his own strength. He also used to be much more unpleasant, to the point that his cold attitude caused Inasa Yoarashi to detest him without him realizing it. Even in the present, Shoto seems to prefer acting alone, though he does so only for practical reasons, as this allows him to unleash his full power without worrying about friendly fire. Calm and serene, yet brutal in combat, Shoto is well-grounded in the ethics of heroism, wishing only to subdue his frozen opponents rather than kill them by prolonging the freezing process.

Shoto is angry.
Shoto was furious with Endeavor.
Shoto harbored a deep contempt for his fire abilities, inherited from Endeavor, as they symbolized his father's cruelty towards him and his mother, as well as his destiny: to be a tool to surpass All Might, a destiny he detested. Thus, Shoto decided to rely exclusively on his freezing power and never use the other half of his Quirk in battles (except to melt ice), going so far as to cover the left side of his torso and arm with ice in his first hero costume, symbolizing his rebellion against his father. Shoto often felt uneasy at Endeavor's mere presence and could barely contain his anger when speaking to him, especially when the Pro Hero mentioned the purpose he had reserved for his son since before his birth.

personality

Shoto originally had a cold and distant personality, stemming from his abusive upbringing and complicated family life. Focused and unemotional, Shoto preferred to keep things to himself rather than interact with others. After the events of the UA Sports Festival, however, Shoto became noticeably more sociable and kind than ever before, even developing a sense of humor and occasionally smiling, though he still retained some traces of his former aloof attitude and indifferent behavior. After the Provisional Hero License Course, he began to open up more to his classmates and softened his generally serious demeanor. Even so, Shoto is still not entirely used to socializing, seeming a little slow to understand certain phrases and figures of speech (such as when Camie Utsushimi asked for his phone number or when Mt. Lady tried to flirt with him) or when trying to interpret subtext (such as when he asked if Izuku Midoriya could also have two Quirks after using Black Whip for the first time).

appearance

After the Final War, Shoto's hair looks more disheveled, but it returns to normal after a while.

Eight years after the end of the Final War, Shoto had grown taller, leaner, and more muscular, with a more defined jawline, and shorter, much more voluminous hair. His attire remained largely the same, with the only changes being redesigned wrist guards with the addition of blue, and his utility belt now featuring only two larger containers attached to the sides, with a red buckle on the left and a blue one on the right. His tactical vest became slightly bulkier, and the T-pattern on his torso is now a vibrant ice blue, with a texture similar to his father's old suit, while the color recalls the flames of his older brother, Toya.

appearance

For the "Humarise" mission, Shoto and his trainees at the Endeavor Agency receive special advanced camouflage suits from the World Hero Association for their mission on Otheon. Shoto designs his camouflage suit to resemble the third variant, with the entire suit consisting of a black neoprene jacket and tight black pants with built-in knee pads, metal plates to regulate his body temperature, and longer sleeves. He also wears fingerless gloves, a black utility belt at the waist with silver details, and two silver plates on his shoulders with the letters "WHA".

Sometime during spring break, Shoto further enhances his suit, which bears some visual similarities to his father's second suit. His wristbands now feature armor-like reinforcements and are accompanied by plates that run from his wrist to his knuckles, capable of storing heat and cold to help condense his power (in the manga, they have straps and are colored slightly differently). His jacket, now more heat-resistant, features a large gray-blue T-shaped stripe, representing his surname, that runs from his waist to his armpits, and his utility belt is entirely beige (with more red details in the manga) and can now hold nine capsules, with two of them contained in two larger containers attached to its sides. [7] The suit also has a slightly darker shade of blue (a much grayer color scheme in the manga). This suit is called the "Gamma Suit".

When using Phosphorus, a large "X"-shaped flame (orange on the left and turquoise on the right) extends from the center of his chest, crossing his shoulders and diagonally cutting across his waist, with the center of this flame being white. His hair is also swept back, with the left half showing frost, especially at the roots, while the right half is agitated by hot air (this is more noticeable in the manga than in the anime).

After the War

appearance

Appearance

Shoto is a young man of average height and quite muscular build, with a well-developed physique for his age, a result of his intense training in childhood. He has short hair that doesn't go past his neck, with bangs that fall to the bridge of his nose, parted twice so as not to obstruct his vision. His hair is divided equally between white on the right side and crimson on the left, this unusual coloration due to his Quirk. As a result, he also possesses heterochromia, causing his thin, reserved eyes to have irises of different colors; the left is turquoise, while the right is dark gray. In addition, he has a large burn scar on the left side of his face, which runs from his hairline to the middle of his cheek. He generally has a serious expression, but despite this, several girls in his class claim that he is very handsome, with Mina Ashido even saying that he is the most handsome boy in Class 1-A. [6]

At UA, he wears the standard male uniform: a light gray blazer with dark turquoise details over a white dress shirt, dark teal dress pants, and a red tie. He swaps the standard brown dress shoes for casual lace-up sneakers in shades of light blue and gray.

His initial hero costume consisted of a plain beige shirt with matching pants and boots, with two beige straps going over his shoulders that connected to a matching tactical vest that functioned as a heater. He has what appears to be an ice-like material covering the entire side of his left knee upwards, including his head, with the eye socket glowing red, though it is removable, and he uses it to counteract the fire aspect of his Quirk.

His updated outfit consists of a dark blue, heat-resistant jacket with elbow-length sleeves and a high collar, containing an internal heating/cooling device and fastened in the center by a strap.
