The nighttime highway trembled under the roar of a motorcycle. Suddenly, a bright bolt of light appeared from the darkness, falling straight down, and then a body collapsed onto the asphalt, casting a pale glow. A wheel screeched a millimeter from the white shoulder.

The motorcyclist knocked off his helmet and saw a young man with ashen hair. Bloody stumps were visible behind his back—as if someone had ripped the bones right out of his spine. Tears froze on his dirty cheeks. The man cursed silently and ran up to the young man.

"Where did you even come from, firefly?" the motorcyclist exhaled, picking the boy up.
