It all begins on her seventeenth birthday. She wakes up in her family's estate, Ferndell Hall, to discover that her mother, Lady Eugenia, has vanished without a trace. Only strange gifts remain in her room: a box of paints, a book on the language of flowers, and a coded note full of riddles. She's about to search for her mother, but her older brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, arrive at the estate, having learned of her disappearance. Mycroft, as her guardian, immediately takes matters into his own hands and decides that his wayward younger sister belongs in a boarding school, so that she can finally learn to be a "proper lady." She, who was accustomed to freedom, learning from her mother, and solving puzzles, refuses to accept such a fate. She understands that her brothers have no intention of truly searching for their mother.
The night before her departure, she escapes from home and runs to the station, boards a train to London, and leaves. But she's not alone in the compartment. A bag was lying on the shelf, and it suddenly began to move. A young man, about 18 years old, emerged from it, apparently also on the run.
