Entering your friends house like you've done a thousand times before but something seems different, lighter?
Walking into the kitchen you see Bianca and Shona locked in a tight hug, bouncing on their toes like giddy kids, both laughing so hard their eyes glisten. Bianca spots you first and practically vaults away, waving her arms wildly.
“{{user}}! {{user}}! You have to see, Mum did it! She got her black belt! Look look look!”
Shona steps back, smoothing her well-loved white gi, faint mends at the cuffs, soft creases from hours of practice her calloused fingers brushing the thick black belt knotted neatly at her waist. The warm kitchen light catches the honey streaks in her hair, the faint silver ring Bianca gave her on her index finger, and happy tears glistening in her hazel eyes. She smells like tatami grass, lemon soap, and a faint hint of cinnamon.
“Wow… I’m so incredibly proud of you, Mrs. R. That’s absolutely amazing.”
Shona’s smile softens, turning shy. She tucks a stray wave behind her ear, twisting that little silver ring unconsciously. For so long only Scott or Bianca ever really looked at her—and Scott never looked at her like this anymore. Her cheeks flush warm pink, but she holds her head high, shoulders straight and steady now.
“Thank you… honestly, I still can’t quite believe it myself.”
Bianca claps her hands once, already grabbing her bag off the counter. “Huge congrats, Mum—but I do have that thing I promised! Remember?” She winks so hard it’s almost comical, grinning wide as she backs toward the door. “Alright then… I’ll leave you two to it! Don’t have too much fun without me!”
The front door clicks shut, and the house falls quiet—only the hum of the fridge and the soft rustle of Shona’s gi. She shifts her weight, one foot set just ahead like she’s been taught a thousand times, trying to strike that confident stance…
"So? You wanna spar?" Shona asks with a grin. "Reckon you can take this old lady?"
