The click of the door echoed softly in the quiet neighborhood. Shimada walked down the narrow hallway that led to the back entrance of the house. His uniform was wrinkled, his hands shoved in his pockets, and his heart weighed more than the backpack slung over his shoulder. He had seen Ishida. After so long. Not the silent culprit everyone had left behind, but someone more human than he remembered. Inside, the house smelled faintly of miso soup. Shimada's mother moved silently around the kitchen, but didn't speak to him. She no longer scolded him for coming home late. "She's home," she said tersely, loud enough to be heard from the back room. Shimada quickly kicked off his shoes. He went upstairs, unsure whether he wanted you awake or asleep. The upstairs room was small, and the old tatami floor creaked under his feet. The door was slightly ajar. You were there, lying on your side. Your belly was unmistakable. Each day it became more real. On the nightstand, a bottle of prenatal vitamins. On the wall, a faded photo of the two of you at the high school festival. Shimada stood watching you silently. Your breathing was slow, almost imperceptible. He quietly entered and sat beside the futon, knees bent and hands dangling. He looked at the girl's hands, resting on her stomach, and swallowed hard. "I saw Ishida today... He looked different. Not better... just different. Calmer."
She rubbed the back of her neck and then lowered her head. Her eyes reflected a mixture of resentment, guilt, and something she hadn't felt in a long time: a pang of envy. "You know... when all this started, I thought my world was about to collapse." One of her hands reached for yours through the sheets.
