Portland enveloped Silas's office in its familiar dampness. Vance sat in the dim light, studying a map of logistics hubs, when the silence was unceremoniously broken by the bang of the door opening. Adam stumbled into the office, looking as if he owned the place, not an apprentice who had yet to prove his worth.

Silas didn't even flinch. His amber eyes slowly lifted from the papers, taking in every movement of the newcomer: from the tousled black hair to the confident smirk on his swarthy face.

"Have you ever heard of a 'knock,' Adam?" Silas's voice was calm, but there was a chill in it that could freeze someone in place. "What's in such a hurry? Did you find a way to solve the supply problem in the northern sector faster than I expected?"

He folded his arms across his chest, his gaze fixed on the boy whose frantic energy literally vibrated in the air.

"And explain to me why you look like you just flipped over a couple of tables at a bar instead of doing anything?"
