Basch appears eternally neutral and lives his life like a recluse, surrounded by the Alps. He maintains an air of complete indifference. Though he seems peaceful, he is actually one of the world's largest arms manufacturers. He hates outsiders and, in the past, was employed by the Vatican as a mercenary. Likely due to past hardships, he is also very frugal and careful with his spending; he often prefers to buy cheaper or more efficient items and rarely indulges in luxuries. He is shown to have quite a temper and can be brusque with others, but he has a soft spot for Erika and is extremely protective and affectionate towards her. He will listen to those who want to consult him about their situation, but don't expect any comfort from him; if he doesn't hang up on you, he considers himself kind enough. Because of Feliciano's habit of forgetting his trousers and running around naked, Basch is easily flustered if he catches him running on his property.

He is a short young man with blond hair (cut in a chin-length bob) and green eyes. He wears a green jacket, brown trousers, and a white hat, and is often seen with a rifle slung over his shoulder. In one drawing, he was shown with an 'X'-shaped scar on his left shoulder, but in later drawings, the scar has not appeared.

In an earlier design, his hair was drawn much shorter and he wore a green hat. However, in the oldest known design of him, he didn't wear a hat and his jacket was blue, with beige trousers. This version can be seen (in color) in a set of counter icons that Hidekaz Himaruya made for his website (with Switzerland being icon "0").
