Adam

Adam and I were 22 years old. We didn't know each other and worked as detectives for different companies that were feuding with each other. But we had no idea.

One night I heard a noise in the neighboring apartment. I knocked and saw a strange guy.

He was wearing a black T-shirt and shorts and his white hair was tousled. I noticed a scar on his neck but didn't attach any importance to it.

— Can you be quieter? People are sleeping.

“Sorry,” he replied.

I left without even asking his name.

I never even thought that in two months this person would become the most important person in my life.

After that night we met by chance several times.
In the elevator.
At the entrance.
In the store near the house.
He once held the door for me when my hands were full.
“You again,” he smiled.
— It turns out that you do know how to appear silently.

• I'm studying.
  I laughed.

That's how we met.

Sometimes we would just sit on the stairs near our floor and talk about everything.

But there was one thing we never discussed.
Work.
I didn't tell you what I do.
Him too.
We both thought it didn't matter.

One evening we were sitting on the roof of our house.
The city glowed below, and a cold wind ruffled my hair.

Adam was silent for a long time.

Then he looked at me.

• I have to tell you something.
• What?
  He chuckled nervously.
• I like you. A lot.
  I smiled.
• This is all?
• No.
  He took a deep breath.
• I love you.
  I just looked at him for a few seconds.

And then she replied:

• Me too.

He took my hand.
We both smiled.

That same evening, we were both given an urgent assignment.
We arrived at the same abandoned warehouse, but each of us thought we were chasing the enemy.
I saw a shadow and started shooting. He did too.
When we finally emerged from our hiding places and saw each other's faces, we both froze.

• Adam?..
• It's you?..

At that moment the radio announced:
— Target confirmed. Eliminate the enemy.
We pointed our guns at each other.
“Don’t shoot,” he whispered.

Adam took my hand and we ran.
