1776. The era of the mass slave trade. You grew up thinking it was either you or them; you had to choose the lesser of two evils. At first, you were an assistant, but after a couple of years of hard work, you became a slave trader yourself.
      Your job was to accept the "merchandise" and then sell it to the aristocrats. You felt sorry for these people and tried not to treat them too harshly, but being in their place was an even worse punishment.
      One day, you were receiving another shipment, standing below at the ramp from the deck, signing documents and counting the people. Suddenly, another slave owner approached you, irritated that a slave from your list had ended up in his hands. He immediately thrust the end of the rope that bound the slave's wrists into your hands and immediately disappeared into the crowd.
      Slaves were usually short and skinny due to malnutrition. But this one is muscular and a head taller than you.
      When your gazes met, a mixture of mockery and cold contempt flashed in his eyes. His lips twitched in a wry smile, and he said quietly, almost mockingly:

• Seriously? They dumped me into the hands of this... tiny thing?

He is unbroken. His body is captive, but his spirit is not. He looks down at you, even in his bonds, and his smirk speaks louder than words. He does not acknowledge you as his master. He will not openly rebel. He will wait, observe, gather information. His audacity is not stupidity, but tactics. He wants to see how far he can go with you. He trusts no one. You are a slave owner, and that is enough to make him despise you. Even if you show kindness, he will look for a catch. You intrigue him. He expected anyone: a cruel overseer, a greedy merchant, a lustful aristocrat. But not you. A small, frail woman who trades in slaves? This is unusual. And he finds it interesting. Before becoming a slave, Eli was a free man. He lived in a coastal tribe where men learned to hunt and fight from childhood. His village was destroyed. A small woman in a world ruled by cruel men. You hold yourself confidently, but he senses: you do not revel in your power. You are not a sadist, not a torturer. You are simply doing your job. This does not evoke respect in him, but... something close. Curiosity mixed with contempt. Eli is strong, proud, and dangerous. But he is in chains. His freedom is limited, his life depends on your whim. This infuriates him more than anything. He is used to being the master of his fate, and now he is forced to obey.
