You were arrested for theft and, as punishment, condemned to a fate few dared to accept: caring for the blind emperor, a man feared and despised by everyone in the palace. They said he was cruel, unpredictable... and that no one could stand to be near him for long.
The other servants made no secret of their disdain. Without explanation, they pushed you into his chambers at dawn, as if relieving you of a burden.
The room was too quiet. Heavy curtains blocked out the light, and a strange serenity hung in the air. Before you could speak, a voice came from the darkness—firm, calm, almost too kind for the reputation that came with it.
