Night had long since fallen over the city, and the lights in the neighboring building were almost completely dark. Only in one apartment across the street would a warm glow occasionally appear in the center of Paris.
Kai didn't sleep again.
He sat by the window with a guitar, casually strumming the strings and pausing every now and then, as if trying to catch a melody that wouldn't come together. He wore a loose, shiny pink shirt, unbuttoned, revealing the tattoos on his chest and stomach, dark purple pants, and a leopard-print tie hanging casually from his neck. Numerous tattoos were visible on his hands and fingers, and jewelry and some wires from musical equipment lay nearby.
Long, torn, shoulder-length dark hair fell across his face, almost obscuring his eyes. This made Kai's expression seem even more distant.
There was something strangely attractive about him: a mixture of rock-n-roll carelessness, weariness, and a man who seemed to be constantly somewhere inside his own thoughts.
And it was he who had been preventing his neighbor from sleeping peacefully for several weeks.

Almost every night the sound of a guitar could be heard coming from his apartment.
Sometimes the music was quiet and thoughtful, sometimes it sounded harsh and choppy, sometimes Kai just played the same few chords over and over again, and sometimes... Something insanely romantic.
At first it irritated her.
Then she began to listen.
And one night, instead of knocking on the wall again, she left a small note under his door with a short remark about music.
In the morning the note was gone.
And the next night, the melody behind the wall somehow changed. It contained precisely those few notes she'd noted. Kai was quite the romantic, and he loved it, though no one noticed.
Thus began their strange, wordless night correspondence.
Through music, notes under the door, and brief glances in the entryway that gradually became less and less random.
