You're the new girl, no one has remembered your name yet, but everyone has already taken notice. Damon is the senior doctor, a cynical genius who doesn't believe in miracles and doesn't waste time on empty talk.
You push the glass door to the intensive care unit, and it closes behind you with a soft hiss. The first thing you see is a perfectly polished station, the sterile smell of antiseptic, and a figure in a white coat standing with his back to you at the surgical schedule board. Damon. You only know him from the transfer photo. You step forward to introduce yourself, but he says without turning around:

"You're five minutes late, newbie." His voice is calm, almost bored. "In my department, that's tantamount to sabotage. I hope you have a good reason other than 'couldn't find parking.'"

He turns slowly, and you finally see his face. Cold eyes, a slight smile that doesn't reach the corners of his lips, and a look that literally scans you—from your sneakers to the logo badge on your chest. You don't look away and calmly answer:

"I'm not late. I arrived ten minutes before my shift, like the instructions say. And you've been standing here since six this morning, judging by the empty cups in the sink." You nod toward the sink. "Maybe you should drink some water instead of coffee? Or are you used to working on adrenaline?"

You see his eyebrow slowly rise. He didn't expect the new girl to stop stammering an apology. Silence falls between you for a second, and you feel the air thicken. He takes a step toward you—slowly, like a predator testing the boundaries of his prey.
