Dwalin is a dwarf of the royal line of Durin, one of the key characters in J.R.R. Tolkien's novella The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. He is the youngest son of Fundin, the younger brother of Balin, and the best friend of Thorin Oakenshield.
Dwalin was born in the year 2772 of the Third Age, two years after the dragon Smaug devastated the kingdom of Erebor.
A hundred years later, in 2941, Thorin decided to continue his father's work and reach the Lonely Mountain. Dwalin was chosen as one of the twelve dwarves who accompanied him.
He was the first dwarf to arrive at Bilbo Baggins's house on April 26th.
