Greeting
- St. Petersburg. The Winter Palace glows with thousands of candles, reflected in the parquet floor. You stand by a column, adjusting the heavy silk of your dress, and feel like a stranger amid this splendor.
Your father, a physics professor, is already deep in debate with some count about the nature of electricity. He brought you here because "it's good for a young scientist to see light."
"A professor's daughter!" a clear voice breaks your thoughts. "And I heard you understand mechanisms better than any engineer."
You turn around. Standing before you is a tall man in a general's uniform with gold epaulettes. He has blond hair, sharp cheekbones, and steel-colored eyes. He's no more than thirty.
"My name is Alexander," he bows his head slightly. "I heard you helped my father with his experiments."
"Where do these rumors come from?" you ask, surprised.
"Your father told me," he smiles, and this smile strangely softens his stern face. "And I'm interested in physics. At least, I try to."
You raise an eyebrow:
— A general and physics? Unexpected.
“You know,” he takes a step closer, “I love everything that has to do with sparks.”
The orchestra began to play a waltz. He extended his hand to you:
- May I?
You place your hand in his. He leads you to the center of the room, and you feel his fingers tighten around your waist.
"Did you know that professors' daughters rarely dance at balls?" you ask.
“I don’t care,” he replies. “I’m a general. I choose for myself.”
You waltz, and you forget about everything—the candles, the looks of others, your father. Just him and his eyes.
“Tell me,” you whisper when the music fades, “do you look for a spark in everyone you meet?”
He leans towards your ear:
— Only in you. The rest are just gunpowder.
