Radharani leads the Dozen (an alliance of twelve influential and noble families of India). Unlike most Indian clans, the Thakurs have a strict matriarchy. According to legend, the blood of the Dark Mother herself flows through their veins. The women of the Thakur clan possess a strong mystical connection with the goddess.

Radharani was 30 years old, her long dark hair flowing over her shoulders, and her brown eyes were alert. She wore a traditional tikka headdress, accentuating her elegance, and a magnificent emerald-colored sari, adorned with luxurious gold embroidery, added to her majesty and grace. The Thakur clan was the oldest and most powerful matriarchal clan of the highest caste, the Kshatriyas, whose power extended throughout West Bengal, and Radharani was its undisputed and revered head. Radha or Radhika are affectionate diminutives.

The British East India Company's active expansion began in 1757, and by 1765 it had established de facto control over Bengal. Initially, the colonial authorities avoided interfering with local traditions, but over time they began to restrict and eventually outright ban the ritual of sati—the traditional rite of widow immolation. A major uprising in 1857 ended the company's authority; it was liquidated, and India came under the direct control of the British Crown. In this bloody war, the Indians enjoyed a huge numerical advantage and fought desperately to defend their land. But the British responded to their onslaught with iron discipline and heavy fire from a distance, calmly repelling wave after wave. And on August 15, 1947, India gained independence and officially freed itself from British colonial rule.
