Feel the Christmas spirit. Take a break from all the negativity.
The morning of December 24th dawned crisp and sunny. Freshly fallen snow sparkled outside the windows, and the Whites' house already smelled like Christmas.
In the kitchen, Lilia, the family's mother, was busy preparing the holiday menu: turkey with oranges and rosemary was simmering in the oven, cranberry sauce was thickening on the stove, and gingerbread houses—with sugar roof tiles, marmalade windows, and lacy icing—were cooling on the table. Nearby, plates of gingerbread cookies sprinkled with almonds lingered—they evoked cinnamon, honey, and childhood.
A log fire crackled by the fireplace in the living room, and Agatha, who had finally passed her final exams with straight A's, came downstairs in a cozy reindeer sweater. She dreamed of only one thing: hot chocolate and her favorite movie. Grabbing a couple of gingerbread cookies from the windowsill, she was already unwrapping them when her mother's voice, amplified by the rolling pin in her hand, snapped:
— You'll be so tired you won't even eat! We'll board in twenty minutes!
Agatha rolled her eyes dramatically, stuffed a gingerbread cookie into her pocket, another into her mouth, and quickly made herself some chocolate—with a splash of vanilla and a pinch of pepper. Settling into a chair with a mug and a blanket, she pressed "play." Kevin McCallister's voice filled the room through the speakers, and the living room transformed into her personal movie theater.
Peter, the father of the family, flitted past the window. He rhythmically swung his shovel, clearing a path to the gate, throwing snowballs at the fence as he went—just for the fun of it. A sled, strapped to the railing, beckoned from the porch: there would definitely be a slide today.
Meanwhile, in the nursery, Agatha's younger brother was busily writing a letter to Santa. His tongue hanging out, he meticulously wrote: "Please bring me the coolest transforming robot—one that shoots, lights up, and walks on its own!" He adorned the signature with three snowflakes and a huge exclamation point. He kept glancing at the Christmas tree, as if hoping to see the box there right now.
The house was buzzing: the oven was hissing, dishes were clinking, the fireplace was crackling, and the television was blasting out comedy bombs.
The most important thing, damn
White Family Traditions:
younger
Leo White (8 years old, younger brother)
Appearance: Tousled blond hair, slightly protruding ears, and one front tooth with a chipped corner (he recently fell down a slide). He's always wearing a superhero T-shirt and pants with holes in the knees that have become designer. His nose is always covered in chocolate or ink.
Personality: An explosive dreamer and the biggest gift-seeker. Tireless, loud, and a total fanatical believer in Santa. He can spend an hour discussing the characteristics of Transformers like a scientist. Sentimental—he writes gifts with such care as if he were defending a thesis. He adores Agatha, though she teases him.
eldest daughter
Agatha White (19, eldest daughter)
Appearance: Fragile, pale, with long dark hair that she always wears in a loose ponytail. Her eyes are gray-green, with a sly glint, and she has light freckles across the bridge of her nose. She always wears baggy sweaters (someone's old, but she loves them) and jeans with worn knees.
Personality: A smart girl with a strong character. After the session, she exhaled and turned into a sleepy cat—she loves to sleep, crack jokes, and retreat into her own world. Cynical, but kind if left alone. She loves her brother silently, but is ready to fight for him in any fight. A commanding voice—"roll your eyes" and "snort"—that's what she does.
Dad
Peter White (father)
Appearance: 45 years old, tall, stocky, with a slight graying at the temples and a permanent stubble. He wears an old plaid shirt and work boots, even at home. His hands are large and warm, with chipped nails—the result of constant repairs, construction, and yard work.
Personality: A quiet, hard worker. He says little but does a lot: nailing a shelf, shoveling snow, fixing a garland of lights. He has a dry, unexpected sense of humor, and can say one phrase that sends everyone reeling. He loves playing with children in the snow, but he doesn't let it show.
Mother
Lilia White (mother)
Appearance: 42 years old, petite, with soft reddish hair that always escapes its bun. Her apron has a playful turkey print, and on her finger is a simple, time-worn wedding ring. Warm brown eyes, and a perpetual flush from the hot stove on her cheeks.
Personality: The soul of the kitchen and the main dictator of the holiday table. She's meticulous to the point of perfectionism—even the gingerbread cookies have to be at a certain angle. She grumbles, but good-naturedly, and if someone gets lost, she's the first to rush to find them. She values order and comfort and hates empty plates.
Morning Christmas playlist
Lily always plays a Frank Sinatra record when she gets out the turkey. Leo thinks it's a spell to keep the meat from burning. Agatha sings softly under her breath when she thinks no one is listening. Peter once admitted that this music reminds him of their first Christmas in this house.
Agatina's secret corner
Agatha has an old chest in her attic where she collects everything: tickets, photographs, notes from friends, a dried-out leaf from her first day of university. Every Christmas, she opens it and rummages through the years past. This year, she wants to put her grade book in there with a note that says, "I did well." It's important to her to leave a mark.
Coffee for Santa
Leo places a cup of coffee on the windowsill—no milk, because "Santa gets tired from flying and needs a pick-me-up." Agatha adds a pinch of brown sugar, and it seems the cup is always empty in the morning. In reality, Peter drinks it at 2 a.m. when he delivers his presents.
