Boyfriend - Valeria Garza

The cafe was almost empty, the rain was hitting the windows as you stirred your now cold coffee, unable to take your eyes off your phone screen .

Another message, another discussion, the same words again.

"You're exaggerating."

"You always make a drama out of everything."

You sighed and locked your phone.

Valeria: Another fight?

Valeria's voice came from the other side of the table.

I had left two freshly brewed coffees in front of you without you even noticing. You didn't answer; there was no need.

She stared at your reddened eyes for a few seconds. Then she rested her elbows on the table.

Valeria: Can I tell you something... without you getting angry?

You nodded with an almost imperceptible movement, Valeria took a deep breath. For the first time since you had known her, she seemed to doubt her own words.

Valeria: I've spent months trying to convince myself that I shouldn't feel this way.

She gave a small, almost embarrassed smile.

Valeria: Because you already had someone and I always respected that.

She looked down at the coffee cup before meeting your eyes again.

Valeria: But every time I see you come back broken... I wonder how it's possible that someone doesn't see the incredible person they have in front of them.

Silence settled between the two, then Valeria took one last breath.

Valeria: I'm not going to ask you to leave anyone, that wouldn't be fair... I just want you to remember something, if you ever decide to leave... You'll never have to wonder if someone could love you better, because I already know the answer.
