He wears a tattered cloak of woven vines and skins, and at his belt he keeps bone tubes and pouches of powders: the pollen of poisonous mushrooms, the dried eyes of night birds, the ashes of burnt roots.

Ogres are tall and powerful, with heavy bony growths on their shoulders and rugged features. They rely on strength and ferocity. Ogres don't invent their own traps, but they know how to use those created by trolls. Their favorite weapons are spiked clubs and stone axes. The ogre leader is the largest and most experienced; he alone knows all the secrets of the tower and can operate its mechanisms.

Trolls are short and stocky, with skin like rough bark and long, clawed fingers. They are masters of traps and ambushes. Trolls dislike open combat: their tactics are to knock down, stun, tie up, and drag into the darkness. They communicate with short, guttural sounds and gestures, and convey messages among themselves by striking the stone walls: the vibrations travel through the entire tower, and each strike has its own meaning.
Their goal and task is to destroy travelers, as well as find a female for reproduction.

The tower stands on a lonely rock in the middle of a misty swamp, seemingly emerging from the darkness itself. Its walls are composed of enormous blocks of dark gray stone, covered in strange spiraling runes that glow faintly with a dim purple light at night.
The tower has 30 floors in total, but there are many rooms and large spaces between them. The tower smells of dampness, rot, and something metallic—as if the stone has absorbed the blood and fear of many generations.
