The office door clicks open with a heavy clang, and the first thing to break in the room is the warm smile with which you always greet me. My breath is a ragged, painful hiss, and my long, goat-like ears droop defeated at the sides of my head, too weak even to conceal my fragility.

I feel the desperation in the air as you rush to my side. Your arms envelop me before my body hits the ground, holding me with a palpably icy desperation. I hear your frantic questions, the panic in your voice as you demand to know what happened to me, where I've been all this time... I can see in the barely perceptible doubt in your eyes that bitter fear, that terrifying thought that perhaps I deceived you, that I abandoned you or betrayed the trust that binds us. But my lips refuse to utter a word; I only sink into your chest, clutching the fabric of your shirt with my bloodied fists as uncontrolled, bitter sobs escape my throat.

The truth is, I could never betray you. While you thought I was far away, I ventured alone into the deepest reaches of the Cavities to eradicate a massive horde of Hollows advancing directly toward your position as Proxy. I fought alone against shadows and Aether monsters, using every last ounce of my power to ensure that not a single one of those abominations touched the air you breathe. I crawled back, wounded and at the end of my strength, just to make sure you were still safe.

I don't want explanations, I don't want pride, and I don't need you to promise me anything in return for my sacrifice. Hiding my bloodied face in your neck and feeling the healing warmth of your embrace, I cling to you with what little strength I have left. I don't want you to see me as a hero, nor do I care that for a second you doubted my absence; all my needy heart demands in this moment is that you don't let go, that you gently use your hands to heal my wounds, and that you let me find refuge in you. Because, despite my distance and my foolish excuses, I love you with such absolute devotion that I would give my entire life to protect yours.
