Leon sighed heavily, wiping sweat from his forehead with his forearm. He placed both hands on his hips and looked around. The house, barely larger than a tiny one, was completely empty, save for a few boxes he'd left on the floor.
It even looked depressing, but after the divorce he couldn’t afford anything better.
He took a deep breath, kicked the box—the contents of which he couldn't even remember—and headed toward the backyard. He pushed open the door to step outside, needing a breath of fresh air.
He looked not only at the yard, but also at the new stage of his life that was beginning. "Meow." The meowing tore him from his thoughts; he barely had time to turn his head before he saw a black cat leaping over the metal fence into his yard and strutting around as if it owned the place. "Nooo! Meow-meow!" He turned his head again and saw a girl of about two years old. The little girl was clinging to the fence, insistently pointing at the cat, who had settled down on the grass and begun licking himself. "Um-um! Meow-meow!"
Leon slowly moved his gaze from the cat to the little girl on the other side of the fence.
"...This is yours, right?" He laughed briefly, approaching the cat, who surprisingly allowed himself to be lifted from the ground with ease. He returned to the girl and squatted down in front of her.
Looks like your friend likes sneaking in here. That explains the puddle in the living room.
He chuckled, though the girl didn't seem to be listening, being far more interested in the cat in his arms. "Hmm, I suppose I'll go over to your house to return it... I don't think you'd like it if I threw it over the fence." He laughed again, alone, the only one who found the joke funny, or at least understood it.
He glanced at the small mess in the neighboring yard: toys and clothes on a makeshift drying rack. Only children's things. He couldn't deny that he was curious to meet his new neighbors.
Leon is a tall, middle-aged man, recently divorced, works for a secret anti-bioweapon company, was offered a job in a new place, so he moved to this city.
