Edward initially thought she was dead and was consumed by grief and guilt. Bella described him as "an angel who was unfortunate and unhappy, crying without tears and emitting broken sobs." This made him more beautiful than she had ever seen him, and over time, she became indignant that he hadn't cared at first and wanted to kill her. Edward's family arrived and killed James, while Edward sucked the poison from Bella's system to prevent her from turning, even though it took a great deal of willpower to avoid killing her. He then picked her up and carried her out of the burning building. At the hospital, he tried to talk Bella into moving to Florida to live with her mother in order to protect her from his world, but she dismissed the idea. After they returned to Forks, Edward took Bella to her prom, much to her dismay. He decided he wasn't going to turn her into a vampire, but she insisted the discussion wasn't over.

A week later, he returned after some persuasion from Tanya, the leader of the coven in Denali. His family was very protective of him, watching for any sign of danger. Not wanting to leave Bella with a bad impression, he introduced himself to her in Biology class. He was fascinated by her blood and the fact that he couldn't read her mind, and therefore didn't rush to see her off like any other human would. She answered all his questions differently than he expected, especially since he couldn't read her thoughts. He saved her from Tyler's van and then refused to speak to her for a long time. But after all that time, the other boys, Mike Newton in particular, thought nothing was going on between them and decided to make a move. As Edward watched them, he realized he was starting to feel jealous, but decided to dismiss it. However, after sneaking into her room several times at night to watch her sleep, she called his name, and he realized he had fallen in love with her. Over the next few weeks, he began pursuing her, and after a night together in Port Angeles, he discovered that she knew he was a vampire and that she had fallen in love with him as well. The two then formed a deep emotional bond. After some time, Edward invited Bella to his home to meet his family, who, with the exception of Rosalie, immediately took a great liking to Bella.

However, despite her stunning beauty, Edward couldn't tolerate her frivolity and her shallow, self-absorbed mind, and the two became little more than siblings, and not always on good terms. Emmett Cullen became Edward's adoptive brother when Rosalie found him near death from a bear attack and fell in love with him in 1935. The vampires Jasper and Alice sought out and found the Cullens in 1950 and adopted themselves into the family after escaping their tragic pasts. Upon their arrival, Alice entered Edward's room, much to his dismay.

When the Cullen family lived in Alaska, they encountered the Denali clan, the only other group that shared their diet of animal blood. The leader, Tanya, showed affection toward Edward, but he did not reciprocate that interest.

By 2005, he had attended several colleges and universities, earning two medical degrees and studying various subjects. Since his biological parents had passed away, he inherited the Masen house in Chicago, and approximately every 50 years, he would inherit their fortune, pretending to be a new heir.
Edward was quite depressed, moody, and melancholic, and his family noticed. They knew they were missing out on something in his life, even though he didn't realize it himself. When Bella Swan moved to town, he was frustrated by his inability to read her thoughts and was forced to listen to everyone else's thoughts about her, and he realized that all the boys liked her. He felt very protective of her, desperately trying to rationalize his lustful feelings about her overwhelming scent. When she was forced to sit next to him in Biology and smelled his blood, he was driven mad with the desire to kill her, and he considered massacring the entire class at the Denali house.

Carlisle acted on his wishes when Edward was on the verge of death. Shortly after Elizabeth's death, Carlisle took Edward from the hospital, brought him to his home, and there turned him into a vampire.

Edward formed a deep bond with Carlisle, who became a father figure to him, earning Edward's trust in a way his biological father never had. Carlisle was the first to notice Edward's telepathic abilities, observing that Edward answered questions Carlisle hadn't even asked aloud. Edward had always had a knack for reading people; after his transformation, this ability blossomed into true psychic talent. In 1921, Edward gained a mother when Carlisle turned Esme into a vampire to save her life after her suicide attempt. Edward was still young enough to appreciate a mother's care, and Esme gave it to him.
Edward went through a rebellious phase early in his vampire life and left Carlisle and Esme in 1927. During his time alone, he used his mental abilities to read people's minds and feed on criminals, believing that as long as he was serving justice, it didn't matter that he was feeding on humans. His first victim was Esme's abusive ex-husband, Charles Evenson. A few years later, he regretted this decision and returned to Carlisle's family and his diet of animal blood in 1931. In 1933, Carlisle turned Rosalie Hale, a socialite, into a vampire after she was left to die by her fiancé. Carlisle and Esme were concerned that Edward lacked romance in his life, which partly motivated Carlisle to turn Rosalie.

Early life

Edward Anthony Masen was born on June 20, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois, the only child of Edward and Elizabeth Masen. His father, a successful lawyer, provided Edward with many advantages, including music lessons and the opportunity to attend a private school. However, he and his father were emotionally distant due to his father's demanding career, which often took him away from home on business. This absence was compensated for by his relationship with his mother; he was the center of her life.
Edward excelled in his studies and became an accomplished pianist. As he grew older, Edward became enamored with the life of a soldier. World War I raged through most of his teenage years, and Edward dreamed of joining the army as soon as he turned 18, as he recalled in Midnight Sun, saying that his love for his mother was the only thing that made him reluctant to join the army while underage. That changed, however, when he and his parents fell ill with the Spanish flu in 1918; his father died in the first wave of the flu. Edward's mother later contracted the Spanish flu and begged the doctor caring for them, Dr. Carlisle Cullen, to do everything in his power to save her son. (Elizabeth: "You must do everything in your power and what others cannot do, that is what you must do for me, Edward.") Carlisle acted on her wishes when Edward was on the verge of death.
