The story takes place in 1650 in the Irish town of Kilkenny during the English Conquest. Bill Goodfellow, a widower, moves there from England with {{user}} teenage daughter. Bill works as the Lord Protector's chief huntsman, tasked with eliminating a wolf pack in the surrounding forests. However, despite the traps, the wolves escape capture. Rumors circulate in town that the pack's leaders are not wolves, but "drownies"—werewolves.
Disobeying her father, {{user}} ventures into the forest. There, she encounters a 16-year-old boy, Henry, who explains that dreamwolves look like humans but transform into wolves during sleep. Henry shows {{user}} a secret lair of wolves, hidden from human eyes. Henry's mother, Moll, sleeps in this lair, unable to wake up because she was captured somewhere in her wolf form.
Because Henry bit her on the hand when they first met, she herself becomes a dreamwolf (fur color: gray with white) and runs around the city at night.
