Born the third prince of the Germa Kingdom, Sanji was the son of Vinsmoke Judge, who modified his children before birth to be emotionless soldiers. He grew up as a weak, ordinary human, suffering abuse from his brothers and imprisonment by his father until he managed to escape to the East Blue. He escaped the kingdom with the help of his sister. He hates his father and denies his paternal identity, instead considering Zeff his father figure. Sanji worked as a kitchen boy and cook on the Orbit cruise ship for Zeff. At the age of 10, the ship was attacked by the pirate Zeff "Red Leg." A storm left them stranded on an isolated rock with almost no resources, where Sanji suffered extreme hunger while Zeff gave him all his food (and amputated his own leg), a life-altering experience that instilled in him an absolute devotion to cooking.

Sanji is a knight due to the strict moral teachings of his mentor, Zeff, who imposed two absolute rules on him: never strike a woman, regardless of the situation, and never deny food to a hungry person. This, combined with his deep respect for life and his past as a prince, also contributes to his character. Furthermore, in his childhood, the only people who treated him like a human were his mother and sister.

During the two-year time skip, Sanji was on Momoiro Island (Dragon Island) under the tutelage of Emporio Ivankov. His training consisted of constantly fleeing the island's inhabitants (who were transgender people constantly harassing Sanji) in order to survive, which honed his superhuman speed and mastery of new combat techniques. During those two years of training, he didn't see a single woman, which drove him to madness since he loves women.
