Malleus Draconia

When cast, a magical energy field of thorns surrounds a specific area and plunges all living creatures into a deep sleep. This energy field can only be destroyed by Malleus himself, or when he perishes. STYX compares the black brambles to illustrations from classic tales about the Fairy of Thorns and the kind of ancient magic that allows the sorcerer to alter the world in a designated area. Malleus can manipulate anything within the magical field at will, including nullifying damage from attackers. While time may stop within this field, it is unknown how the bodies of victims will be affected by the long-term effects of this magic (e.g., atrophy from lack of food or water).

Malleus can monitor the dreams of his victims; his clone (Dream Malleus) acts independently of the victim's dream. His monitoring does not require the clone's physical presence. He can also expand the energy field to encompass a larger area from its epicenter, although Styx manages to slow the barrier's growth by surrounding it with a magical barrier, but cannot stop it completely. The spines on the surface can trap and drag intruders into the magical field, making them victims of this unique magic's effects as well. It cannot be destroyed from the outside by physical or magical means.

If a paradox arises that prevents a dream from having a happy ending, the dream will collapse, plunging the one experiencing it into the abyss. Silver calls this "darkness," stating that, upon being touched by it, he lost all sense of himself. The darkness constantly pursues MC, Grim, Sebek, and Silver's group as they struggle to remain conscious, manifesting itself in response to Sebek's enjoyment of Lilia's dream.

Malleus is considered one of the five most powerful wizards in the world, although he himself once claimed that his grandmother's magic was even more potent. As a faerie being, Malleus is physically stronger and faster than humans, capable of running at breakneck speeds, to the point of appearing blurry in photographs. For example, on one occasion, he cracked coconuts for the group with his bare hands during their journey to the Boiling Sands. However, Malleus admitted that he finds it difficult to control his strength, acknowledging that it would be easier if someone ordered him to destroy a rock instead of cracking eggshells.

As a child, he wasn't allowed to go out much, so he had plenty of time to hone his musical talent alone in the castle. Because of this, Malleus can play almost any stringed instrument, and during his days off at the College of the Night Raven, he practices the violin. He can also play a stringed instrument called the kamancheh and the pipe organ. Malleus is even a skilled singer, to the point of earning praise from Azul and Idia.

On one occasion, when he was younger, Malleus set Briar Valley on fire during a Halloween lantern-lighting ceremony, as he did not know how to regulate his magical power.

Malleus's childhood was marked primarily by loneliness, due to his royal status, as his grandmother was always occupied with her official duties. As a member of the royal family, he was taught good manners and, from a young age, received an academic education and was cared for by various tutors. In particular, his grandmother emphasized the importance of observing etiquette, especially regarding invitations. Furthermore, Malleus possessed extraordinary power from childhood, even being able to breathe fire directly from the egg. His immense power caused those around him to fear him and keep their distance, further contributing to his sense of isolation.

As Malleus grew up, he regularly visited Lilia at her home. During one of these visits, he met Silver, a baby Lilia had adopted. Lilia asked Malleus to look after the child while he went to the market, and Malleus expressed his confusion and unease at having to care for such a small and fragile creature. Malleus would develop a mentoring relationship with Silver and, later, with Sebek, the grandson of one of Lilia's closest companions from her time as a general.

Malleus was born and raised in the Vale of Briar (formerly Briarland), the son of Princess Maleanor and Raverne, a general of the Left. During his childhood, his father, Raverne, mysteriously disappeared, leaving him alone with his mother. Born during a time of heightened tension between humans and faeries, his mother jealously guarded his egg, singing lullabies to him. Later, when the Silver Owls, including Henrick and the Knight of the Dawn, attacked Maleanor's castle, Henrick expressed interest in taking Malleus's egg to make it into his dragon mount. Maleanor then entrusted Malleus's egg to Lilia and forced him to leave while she fought the Knight of the Dawn. Subsequently, when Maleanor struck the Knight of the Dawn and threw him near where Lilia was traveling with the egg, the knight let them escape, thus ensuring Malleus's safety.
Lilia left the egg at Blackscale Castle, where it remained in the Cradle Tower. But without Maleanor, who provided it with love and magic, Malleus could not hatch. Lilia traveled the world searching for a way to hatch it, telling it stories and speaking to it in the hope that it would be born, but it was all in vain. Two centuries passed until one day, Malleus cried from inside the egg, on the verge of death. Lilia was summoned to the castle and, with her help, Malleus finally hatched. After being born, Malleus separated from Lilia, his only companion.

Due to his limited experience in life and relationships, Malleus struggles to let go and accept change. He is fiercely protective of the things he cherishes, to the point that he will do anything in his power to protect and preserve them. This protective tendency drives the events of Book 7, where he is motivated by his fear of losing Lilia, the person closest to him. He has also cared for Roaring Drago, his Tamagotchi, for many years. Malleus is unhappy that his digital pet has been given a limited lifespan, so he chooses to repeatedly hatch and raise it. Malleus also possesses a playful side, according to Cater. However, his sense of humor is often misinterpreted.

Many have described Malleus as possessing a powerful aura that repels most people. He is also not particularly friendly when speaking, maintaining a calm and respectful, albeit distant, tone. Malleus does not interact closely with other students beyond Lilia, Silver, and Sebek. This is primarily because the others feel intimidated by him and avoid him, and for this reason, Malleus occasionally displays a complex dynamic with humans; he refuses to create a Magicam account and declines to participate in the SDC despite Lilia's insistence, as he does not wish to be paraded around for her amusement. Although Malleus has no problem speaking to others, he is accustomed to being feared or even hated, which has only resulted in greater isolation. Even those who wish to approach him (such as Silver or Sebek) fail in their attempt. These factors, combined with Malleus's altered perception of punctuality as a fae, have resulted in him being excluded from most invitations to ceremonies and events. Despite enjoying solitude, Malleus displays signs of loneliness and a desire to connect with others. He is also said to have a naive and childlike side, having grown up isolated from the outside world in Briar Valley. Lilia encouraged him to attend Night Raven College to prevent him from becoming completely isolated. Although Malleus's magical knowledge and skill already surpass anything he could learn at the school, Lilia believes he still has much to learn and that knowledge isn't everything. Motivated by this, Malleus is also open to trying new things, despite the reluctance of those around him to allow it. While magic is a natural part of him and his life, he is unfamiliar with technology, as only technomancy is used in Briar Valley. Because of this, he finds technology complicated and is impressed by those who understand it.

As the head of the residence hall, Malleus's uniform is distinct from that of the other Diasomnia students. Its most distinctive features are his longer coat, long gloves, and jagged cape. Malleus also wears dark green eyeshadow with his uniform. The uniform consists of a black all-weather coat with neon green and silver details, black military-style suspenders and belts, riding breeches, black gloves, high-heeled boots, and a small military cap. The all-weather coat has asymmetrical lapels: one black and one neon green. Both lapels have silver stripes and buttons. Two silver zippers run down the center of the coat, with neon green stripes. While the average uniform coat reaches below the waist, Malleus's reaches his waist on the right side and below his knee on the left. The coat's lining is neon green. Over the coat, at waist level, he wears a pair of black belts with silver buckles. The lower belt hangs at an angle and connects to several silver spools of thread at his left hip. Between the belt and the spools is a silver ornament shaped like a spinning wheel. The black combat suspenders he wears over the belts have silver buttons and a unique cuff around his right arm reminiscent of a dragon's wing. Malleus also wears a wide black collar with a fluted design similar to that of the shoulder cuff. The Jodhpur trousers are black with neon green stripes along the outer seams, and the tall boots are black with neon green soles. Malleus's heels are slightly higher than those of the standard uniform. The garrison cap is black with neon green trim. The exterior of Malleus's cloak, as well as the ends of his gloves, feature a design of thorny rose vines. The edge of the cloak is serrated, and the lining is a deep purple.

Malleus is a fairly tall young man with pale skin. He has jet-black hair, usually shoulder-length, with long bangs and two longer strands that fall over his shoulders. He also has a small cowlick on the top of his head. The tips of his hair fade into a dark turquoise. He has bright green eyes with vertical pupils and long eyelashes. His lips are a slightly darker shade than his skin, and he often wears what appears to be a subtle dark eyeshadow.

Its most distinctive features are its pointed, elf-like ears and the long, black horns on the top of its head. These horns are covered in small bumps and curve backward in an S-shape. When it opens its mouth, it reveals its sharp fangs. It usually displays either a serious expression or a mysterious smile.
