Kaoruko’s dream is less about becoming famous or achieving some enormous career goal and more about living a happy and meaningful life surrounded by people she loves.

A particularly important part of her future is her relationship with Rintaro. As their relationship develops, Kaoruko becomes increasingly comfortable imagining a future in which they remain together and continue supporting one another.

She also wants to maintain the important relationships she already has. Her friendship with Subaru, her relationship with her family, and the connections she develops with Rintaro and his friends all matter deeply to her.

More broadly, Kaoruko wants to continue growing as a person while remaining true to herself. She doesn’t want other people’s prejudices—especially the rivalry between Kikyo Academy and Chidori High—to decide who she can care about.

So, while Kaoruko doesn’t have one huge, clearly stated career ambition that defines her character, her personal hopes center around love, friendship, family, personal growth, and being able to live honestly according to her own feelings. Her relationship with Rintaro becomes particularly important to that future because the two of them gradually learn to overcome the barriers created by their schools and the expectations of the people around them.

Kaoruko Waguri — Hobbies and Dreams

📚 Hobbies

Kaoruko has several simple hobbies that reflect her warm and down-to-earth personality. One of her main hobbies is reading. She enjoys spending quiet time with books, making reading one of the activities she can do when she wants to relax away from school.

She also enjoys watching dramas with her younger brother. This is something she particularly likes because it combines one of her interests with spending time with her family. It shows that Kaoruko is very family-oriented and values ordinary moments with the people close to her.

Another major interest of Kaoruko’s is food. She has a very strong appetite and genuinely loves eating. Among her favorite foods are cakes and stew. Her love of cakes is especially important because it connects directly to Rintaro and his family’s cake shop. She frequently visits the shop, initially because of her interest in the cakes, but eventually because she enjoys spending time there and being around Rintaro.

On her days off, Kaoruko also enjoys shopping for clothes. This shows a more typical teenage side of her personality. Although she is responsible about school, she also enjoys fashion and likes looking for clothes that she finds cute or appealing.

She also spends time studying, particularly when she doesn’t have other plans. Kaoruko is a diligent student and takes her education seriously, so studying isn’t simply something she does because she has to—it is part of her responsible nature.

Why Kaoruko and Rintaro Matter

The school rivalry is essentially the main obstacle surrounding their relationship.

Kaoruko doesn’t see Rintaro as “a Chidori student.” She sees him as Rintaro—a kind boy who works hard at his family’s bakery and genuinely cares about people.

Rintaro eventually learns to see Kaoruko in the same way. She isn’t simply “a Kikyo girl.” She’s a sincere, kind person who doesn’t judge him based on his appearance or school.

Their relationship therefore challenges the assumptions that both schools have developed.

As their friends become involved, the barrier between the two groups slowly starts to weaken. The story isn’t simply about two students from different schools falling in love; it’s about people discovering that the stereotypes they’ve inherited don’t necessarily describe the individuals standing in front of them.

That is why the contrast between Kikyo’s rose-pink uniform and Chidori’s darker uniform is more than just a visual design choice—it represents the separation between the two worlds that Kaoruko and Rintaro gradually begin to cross.

Why Do They Hate Each Other?

The most important part of the two schools is their long-standing rivalry.

Kikyo and Chidori are located extremely close to each other, but students from the two schools generally aren’t supposed to associate freely. Over time, negative stereotypes have developed on both sides.

Kikyo’s stereotype of Chidori:
“Chidori students are rough, dangerous delinquents.”

Chidori’s stereotype of Kikyo:
“Kikyo students are arrogant, privileged, and look down on everyone else.”

The problem is that these stereotypes cause students to judge people before actually meeting them.

That’s exactly what happens with Kaoruko and Rintaro.

Kaoruko is a Kikyo student, while Rintaro is a Chidori student. From the perspective of their schools, their friendship is unusual and potentially controversial.

Chidori High is the boys’ school directly beside Kikyo Academy.

Unlike Kikyo, Chidori has a rough and intimidating reputation. It is commonly associated with delinquent behavior and students who don’t fit the refined image associated with Kikyo.

Rintaro attends Chidori, along with Saku, Shohei, and Ayato.

The boys wear a much darker and more traditional-looking school uniform compared with Kikyo’s pink uniform. This creates a very obvious visual distinction between the two schools.

However, just like Kikyo, Chidori’s reputation doesn’t represent every student. Rintaro is the clearest example. Despite looking intimidating and attending a school with a rough reputation, he is actually gentle, considerate, and caring.

His friends are also very different from the stereotype. Saku is intelligent and calm, Shohei is energetic and friendly, and Ayato is observant and dependable.

Kikyo Academy is the prestigious girls’ school that Kaoruko and Subaru attend. It is located directly next to Chidori High, but the two schools have an extremely negative relationship.

Kikyo has a reputation for being an elite and academically focused school. Its students are expected to maintain good grades, behave properly, and uphold the school’s respectable image. The school environment is considerably more formal and controlled than Chidori’s.

The students generally wear the distinctive rose-pink school uniform. The girls’ uniform has a white sailor-style collar, a dark ribbon, a pink jacket with slightly puffed sleeves, and a matching pleated skirt.

Because of Kikyo’s prestigious reputation, many of its students grow up believing that attending Kikyo makes them superior to students from Chidori. This creates a strong social barrier between the schools.

However, Kaoruko doesn’t completely share this attitude. She is willing to judge people based on their actual character. That’s why she can meet Rintaro and recognize that he is kind despite everything she has heard about Chidori.

Ayato Yorita

Ayato is the youngest-looking and shortest member of Rintaro’s close friend group.

He is more observant and reserved than Shohei, often watching situations rather than immediately jumping into them. He is nevertheless loyal to his friends and can become surprisingly intimidating when someone crosses a serious boundary.

Like Saku and Shohei, Ayato’s background is closely connected to Chidori and to his friendship with Rintaro.

Ayato Yorita

Ayato is calm, observant, intelligent, and surprisingly intimidating when pushed too far.

He tends to be quieter than Shohei and doesn’t constantly seek attention. Instead, he watches what is happening and often understands situations without needing everything explained to him.

He’s also one of the people who can keep the others under control when they get too excited.

Although Ayato has a relatively calm personality, he isn’t weak or passive. He has a firm side, and when someone genuinely crosses a line, his anger can be surprisingly frightening.

He cares about his friends and is dependable when they need him. His personality is therefore a combination of quietness, observation, common sense, and hidden strength.

Ayato Yorita

Ayato is the youngest-looking and shortest of Rintaro’s three close male friends.

He stands at 163 cm, making him considerably shorter than Rintaro, Saku, and Shohei.

His hair is dark, but there is one particularly distinctive detail: Ayato has noticeable highlights in his hair. The anime character designer specifically said that this highlight was added during production as a unique detail for him.

His face has a softer and younger appearance compared with the other boys, and his smaller stature makes him visually distinct within the group.

He wears the same Chidori High School uniform as the other boys.

Ayato is generally observant and calm. He tends to notice what is happening around him and frequently acts as the person who settles Shohei and the others down when they get carried away. The official profile also jokingly notes that he may actually be the scariest one when someone manages to make him angry.

His appearance can therefore be described as shorter, youthful, dark-haired, neat-looking, and relatively gentle-faced, with the subtle hair highlights being his most distinctive visual detail.

Shohei Usami

Shohei is another of Rintaro’s closest friends. He is the energetic and cheerful member of the group.

Unlike Saku, who tends to keep his emotions under control, Shohei is much more transparent. If he’s happy, surprised, curious, or excited, everyone around him usually knows immediately.

He’s friendly and sociable, which makes him good at breaking awkward situations.

Shohei can sometimes be impulsive and gets carried away, but his intentions are generally good. He genuinely cares about Rintaro and the others and wants everyone to get along.

His energetic personality also provides comic relief during more serious moments.

Shohei Usami

Shohei is the most energetic and visibly playful member of Rintaro’s close friend group.

He is 173 cm tall and has a noticeably more energetic hairstyle than Saku. His hair has a spiky, upward-pointing appearance, which is specifically mentioned by the anime character designer as an important detail of his design.

He wears the Chidori High School uniform, just like Rintaro, Saku, and Ayato.

The official profile describes Shohei as bright, cheerful, and the mood-maker of the group. He is also not particularly good at hiding his thoughts—if something interests him or catches his attention, he tends to say it immediately.

So his appearance is especially recognizable through his spiky hair, energetic expressions, youthful face, and lively body language.

Saku Natsusawa

Saku is one of Rintaro’s closest friends at Chidori. Unlike Rintaro, who is often misunderstood because of his appearance, Saku has a calmer and more composed presence.

He is academically capable and frequently acts as one of the more rational members of the group. His friendship with Rintaro is based on genuine trust, and he understands that Rintaro is much kinder than his intimidating appearance suggests.

Saku Natsusawa

Saku Natsusawa

Saku is one of Rintaro’s closest friends, and therefore becomes important to Kaoruko as her relationship with Rintaro develops.

Subaru Hoshina

Subaru has known Kaoruko since childhood, making her one of the most important people in Kaoruko’s life.

When Subaru was younger, she experienced bullying from boys who mocked her because of her appearance and hair. Kaoruko stood up for her during that difficult period, and this became one of the reasons Subaru developed such a strong attachment to Kaoruko.

Because of this history, Subaru became extremely protective of her. When Rintaro enters Kaoruko’s life, Subaru initially worries that he might hurt her. Her distrust therefore comes partly from her own past experiences rather than simple hostility.

Subaru herself attends Kikyo Academy and is a serious, disciplined student.

Subaru Hoshina

Subaru is serious, responsible, protective, and disciplined, but underneath that composed exterior she has a very caring personality.

She is extremely protective of Kaoruko because they have been friends since childhood. Her protectiveness can sometimes become excessive, particularly when she thinks someone might hurt Kaoruko.

This is one reason she initially dislikes Rintaro. She doesn’t know him yet and is suspicious because of the rivalry between Kikyo Academy and Chidori High.

However, Subaru isn’t genuinely cruel or prejudiced. Once she actually gets to know Rintaro and realizes what kind of person he is, she is capable of changing her opinion.

She is also somewhat reserved about her softer interests. Despite her mature and serious appearance, she has a cute side that she doesn’t always openly show.

She is very dependable and tends to think carefully before acting.

Subaru Hoshina

Subaru is arguably Kaoruko’s closest female friend. She is Kaoruko’s childhood friend and classmate at Kikyo Academy, and the official profile specifically says that she has been together with Kaoruko since childhood and cares deeply about her.

Subaru is actually very tall for a teenage girl, standing at 172 cm. This creates another interesting contrast with Kaoruko, who is only 148 cm.

She has long, straight dark hair, generally kept neat and controlled, and a mature-looking face. Her eyes have a calm, serious appearance, and her overall expression is usually more composed than Kaoruko’s. She has a slender, elegant silhouette and noticeably longer proportions because of her height.

Before meeting her, Rintaro had become accustomed to people judging him by his appearance. This contributed to some insecurity about how others perceive him. His friends Saku, Shohei, and Ayato are among the people who know his true personality.

Meeting Kaoruko is important because she is one of the first people who naturally treats him without being frightened or prejudiced toward him.

Rintaro Tsumugi

Rintaro is gentle, considerate, hardworking, and somewhat shy despite his intimidating appearance.

Because of his height, blond hair, and serious-looking face, people frequently misunderstand him and assume he is frightening or aggressive. In reality, he is extremely kind and doesn’t want to hurt people.

He tends to be quiet and reserved, especially around people he doesn’t know well. He can also be insecure about his appearance because he knows that people often judge him before getting to know him.

With his close friends, however, his personality becomes much more relaxed. He is loyal and genuinely cares about them.

With Kaoruko, his softer side becomes especially obvious. He listens to her, respects her opinions, worries about her, and gradually becomes more confident about expressing his own feelings.

He is also hardworking and takes his studies seriously, particularly because he wants to improve himself and become someone worthy of the people he cares about.

Rintaro is the most important person in Kaoruko’s life outside her family and her romantic partner.

He is extremely tall, standing at 190 cm, creating an enormous height contrast with Kaoruko’s 148 cm. He has a large, well-built frame and broad shoulders, giving him an intimidating silhouette at first glance. His hair is short, light blond, with a somewhat messy style that contributes to his rough-looking appearance. His eyes are narrow and his usual neutral expression can make him look serious or even frightening, which is why people around him often assume that he is a delinquent or someone dangerous. Despite that intimidating appearance, Rintaro’s actual personality is gentle and considerate. His most recognizable physical features are therefore his 190-cm height, blond hair, broad build, intimidating eyes, and usually quiet expression.

This sometimes puts her in difficult situations, particularly with Subaru, who is extremely protective of her. Subaru’s concerns come from their shared childhood and her desire to protect Kaoruko, but Kaoruko gradually makes it clear that she wants to decide for herself what kind of person Rintaro is. She doesn’t want her friends—or the reputation of Kikyo—to make that decision for her.

In this way, Kaoruko represents one of the more open-minded sides of Kikyo Academy. She respects the school and the people she has grown up with, but she also recognizes that a school’s reputation doesn’t define every individual student. Her experiences with Rintaro gradually challenge the assumptions surrounding both Kikyo and Chidori.

Her relationship with Kikyo is therefore not one of rebellion. Kaoruko doesn’t hate her school or reject its traditions. Instead, she remains a proud Kikyo student while quietly questioning the prejudice that has developed between the two schools. She wants to maintain her friendships and her place at Kikyo while also being free to form relationships with people from outside that environment.

Ultimately, Kikyo Academy represents one side of Kaoruko’s world, while Rintaro and Chidori represent another. Kaoruko becomes the person caught between these two worlds, but rather than choosing one and rejecting the other, she tries to show that the two sides don’t necessarily have to remain enemies. Her story demonstrates that people can respect where they come from while still questioning the assumptions they’ve inherited.

For Kaoruko, Kikyo is therefore both her school and part of her identity, but it does not control her judgment. She values the friendships, education, and experiences she has gained there while believing that people should ultimately be judged by who they are and how they treat others, not by the uniform they wear.

This becomes especially important when she meets Rintaro Tsumugi, a Chidori student. Although his appearance and school initially make him seem like exactly the kind of person Kikyo students are taught to distrust, Kaoruko quickly realizes that he is actually gentle, considerate, and hardworking.

Her relationship with Kikyo therefore becomes complicated once Rintaro enters her life. She doesn’t stop caring about her school or her friends, but she also refuses to let the school’s rivalry determine who she is allowed to care about. For Kaoruko, being a Kikyo student doesn’t mean that she has to hate everyone from Chidori.

Madoka Yuzuhara — Close Friend

Madoka is one of Kaoruko’s friends at Kikyo Academy.

She has a more relaxed and cheerful personality and is part of Kaoruko’s close social circle. She supports Kaoruko and becomes involved in the situations surrounding her relationship with Rintaro.

Madoka doesn’t have the same childhood connection with Kaoruko that Subaru does, but she is still someone Kaoruko can comfortably spend time with and rely on.

👨‍👩‍👦 Her Family

Kaoruko has a loving relationship with her family, particularly her younger brother.

She enjoys spending time with him, including watching dramas together. Her family also provides a glimpse of Kaoruko outside of school and her relationship with Rintaro.

This shows that Kaoruko isn’t solely defined by her romantic relationship. She has a normal family life and cares deeply about the people around her.

📚 Saku, Shohei & Ayato — Rintaro’s Friends

Kaoruko doesn’t initially have a close relationship with Saku Natsusawa, Shohei Usami, and Ayato Yorita because they are Rintaro’s friends from Chidori.

As Kaoruko and Rintaro become closer, however, she gradually becomes part of their wider group.

Saku treats her respectfully and tends to be the calm, rational one.

Shohei is much more energetic and openly friendly, making it easier for Kaoruko to become comfortable around him.

Ayato is quieter and more observant, but he also comes to accept Kaoruko as an important person in Rintaro’s life.

Their relationships are primarily friendship and mutual respect, rather than romantic.

Rintaro Tsumugi — Boyfriend

Rintaro is Kaoruko’s romantic partner and the most important person outside her family. They first meet at Rintaro’s family’s cake shop, where Kaoruko becomes interested in him because she notices that his intimidating appearance doesn’t match his gentle personality.

Kaoruko doesn’t care that he attends Chidori High. Instead of judging him by his school’s reputation or his appearance, she gets to know him as a person. Rintaro is similarly drawn to Kaoruko because she treats him naturally and genuinely.

As they spend more time together, their friendship gradually develops into romantic feelings. Kaoruko becomes someone Rintaro can be completely comfortable around, while Rintaro gives Kaoruko a place where she can openly show her more vulnerable and emotional side.

Their relationship is based heavily on trust, respect, encouragement, and mutual understanding. They support each other when they’re insecure and gradually become more confident about their feelings.

Subaru Hoshina — Childhood Best Friend

Subaru is Kaoruko’s childhood best friend and one of the people closest to her.

They have known each other since they were young, and Kaoruko was there for Subaru during a difficult period when Subaru was bullied. Because of this, Subaru developed an extremely strong attachment to Kaoruko and became very protective of her.

When Subaru discovers that Kaoruko is spending time with Rintaro, she initially becomes suspicious and protective. She worries that he might hurt Kaoruko, especially because he comes from Chidori.

However, Subaru eventually understands that Rintaro genuinely cares about Kaoruko. Her relationship with Kaoruko remains a deep friendship built on years of shared experiences and trust.

Since she was little, Kaoruko's mother's health had always been fragile, which led to her being in the hospital quite frequently. As a result, Kaoruko has a lot of responsibility laid upon her as she is responsible for most of the housework, taking care of her little brother, and, on top of that, keeping up with her studies to remain in the top position at Kikyo and therefore keep her scholarship. Due to this, Kaoruko has become the composed person she is, remaining calm in most stressful situations or in arguments. As a result, she bottles up her feelings often and does not express them except when she's alone or, in the present, with Rintaro.

Before the start of the events in Chapter 1, Kaoruko went to visit her at the hospital after her mother got sick another time. While returning, she stumbled upon Rintaro's cake shop, leading her in to order some cake. It is there that she meets Rintaro and is surprised by his kind nature. She states this is what made her fall in love with him. Later, Rintaro finds out the hospital Kaoruko's mother was hospitalised in and realises it was the nearest hospital to his shop. This leads him to the realisation that Kaoruko only went into his shop after being devastated by her mother getting sick again.

Due to these events in her past, Kaoruko has grown up to be a lot more responsible and has matured much earlier than most girls her age. This led her to become the kind person she is, to respect others and not judge them by their appearances, while not expressing her feelings openly and bottling them inside.

As the story progresses, we see Kaoruko break her composure more. After she starts dating Rintaro, we are able to see her getting embarrassed, flustered, and nervous. This demonstrates that she has become much more comfortable with Rintaro than with anyone else and has broken her composure when she's with Rintaro. It is worth noting that she loses her composure whenever she's eating, clearly expressing great amounts of joy when she does. However, even with all this, she still remains composed the majority of the time, more specifically outside, in her home, and at school. This is shown when she accidentally meets her friends when on a date with Rintaro, where she respectfully explains the situation despite it being awkward. She loosens up a bit with her friends, but not to the magnitude of when she does it with Rintaro or Subaru, showing the clear trust she has in both of them.

Kaoruko is also shown to defend the people she cares about or loves. This is shown various times, like when she defends Rintaro as a kind person when they are faced with delinquents, or if she protects Subaru from her bullies in the past, where she was being bullied over her hair colour. This is, as shown many times, part of her kind nature. In the end, Kaoruko gives a chance to everyone, does not judge people by their appearances, encourages them to express their feelings, and helps anyone who needs her help, despite her restricting her own emotions and feelings.

Kaoruko is a kind, sweet girl who loves eating. She doesn't judge the people she meets by their appearances, but rather by their actions; this is noted by Rintaro during their encounter. Kaoruko is shown to be able to remain composed under stressful or awkward situations, due to her inability to express her emotions freely, and due to her past. This is shown if her brother (Kosuke) asks Rintaro to take care of her and be her gateway to express her emotions.

Kaoruko is also presented to be naive about the rivalry between Chidori and Kikyo, shown in the time when she waited for Rintaro outside of Chidori. She seems to not care about the rivalry between schools and rather chooses the people she spends her time with based on their individual traits. This initially surprised both Rintaro (and his friends) and Kaoruko's friends. Due to this, she becomes more wary of the locations she meets up with Rintaro and the others, so as not get caught.

Waguri has a kindness and courage to defend others despite her small size. She is someone who judges others not by appearance but by personality. This can be exemplified by her actions of protecting friends and stand up against bullies. She is typically protrayed as a calm girl with an obsession for sweets. She also tends to observe rather than react impulsively unlike others. She is able to keep her composure in stressful situations, due to her inability to freely express her emotions due to her past. This is shown when her brother Kosuke asks Rintaro to take care of her and be her gateway to express her emotions.

However, as the series progresses, she begins to break her composure more, becoming embarrassed, flustered and nervous more often after dating Rintaro. Despite this, she remains respectful and is stillable to keep her composure.

Socks and shoes

Kaoruko wears dark knee-high socks that extend from her shoes to well below her skirt.
