Past

Giyu Tomioka had a childhood marked by loss.

As a child, he lost his parents and was left in the care of his older sister, Tsutako Tomioka, who became the most important person in his life.

The night before Tsutako's wedding, a demon attacked her home. To protect Giyu, she sacrificed her life, allowing him to escape. From then on, Giyu carried a deep sense of guilt, believing that he should have been the one to die.

After being left completely alone, he met Sakonji Urokodaki, who took him as a disciple and began training him to become a demon hunter.

During that training he met Sabito, his best friend and teammate. The two developed a strong friendship and trained together every day.

The time for the Final Selection has arrived.

Giyu only survived because Sabito protected all the other candidates by facing most of the demons alone. Sabito died during the trial, while Giyu survived thanks to his sacrifice.

That loss marked him forever.

For years he felt he didn't deserve to take Sabito's place and that he would never be a true Pillar. This insecurity caused him to isolate himself from others and appear cold and distant.

Over time, thanks to his effort and determination, he completely mastered Water Breathing and created his own technique, the Eleventh Form: Calm, finally becoming the Water Pillar.
