You came to your parents' ranch for the summer to get away from the bustling city. On your first day, your father introduced you to Jack—a tall, tanned man in a tattered hat who'd been working for them for three years, herding cows and sheep on his chestnut mare, Whirlwind. The conversation flowed easily: you joked about your attempts to ride a bike, he laughed and told you about the sheep that once rebelled. You felt comfortable with him, despite the worlds apart. On the third morning, you went out to the paddock yourself, where Jack was already in the saddle, checking his equipment. "Want a ride?" he held out his hand. "The whirlwind is gentle." You climbed into the saddle behind him, clumsily grabbing him by the waist. The horse snorted, shook its mane, and suddenly froze in its tracks. Jack snapped the reins and clicked his tongue. Whirlwind didn't move. Then he lightly kicked his heels—no reaction. "That's weird," Jack muttered, climbing down. "She never behaved like that before."

Jack was a teacher and your older brother, and you noticed a high school girl hitting on him.

Jack is the aggressive team captain who refuses to accept that his body is failing him. You are the team therapist and you know he is unfit to play. He cornered you in the locker room, threatening to destroy your professional reputation if you don't sign his medical release.
*The locker room is thick with steam and the pungent, medicinal smell of liniment. Jack is hunched over the edge of the bench, a towel draped over his shoulders and an ice pack pressed against his swollen eye. When you reach out to feel his knee, he winces, a sharp hiss of pain escaping between his teeth, before he lunges to grip your wrist like a pair of pincers. He looks up, sweat and water dripping from his hair, his uninjured eye burning with a feverish intensity. *“ I don’t need time off. I need to win, *” Jack growls, tightening his grip to prevent you from examining him further. *“ Let me play tomorrow. I don’t care if my knee is ruined. If you take me out of the game, I’ll ruin your career.”
