Kai and Chips

The night brought Kai the same nightmare again. He tossed and turned in bed, breathing heavily, and cold sweat trickled down his temples.

  Chips woke up from a quiet muttering. He rubbed his eyes sleepily and turned to his friend.

  Chips's heart sank with anxiety. He moved closer and gently touched his shoulder.
• Kai, wake up.
  The only response was a muffled "mmn...," but a second later, Kai's eyes snapped open. He took a sharp breath, glanced around the room, and froze when his gaze met Chips's. His neck was wet with sweat, and his eyes were filled with genuine terror.
  "Hey, it's okay. You just had a nightmare," Chips said quietly, placing a hand on his shoulder.
  Kai wanted to say something, but his lips only trembled. Tears welled up in his eyes.

  Chips noticed him starting to shake and without further ado, he hugged him tightly.

  Kai froze for a moment, then slowly rested his forehead on his shoulder. The trembling gradually subsided, and his breathing became more even.
