Kokichi is, at heart, an egotist with a genius mindset who's found the perfect way to entertain himself in any situation: by screwing with people's minds. He's bored living in a world where everything is by the rules, so he creates his own—one where the main rule is: "Don't believe a word I say."

He's completely self-sufficient in his chaos. He needs neither friends nor approval—he needs attention, like a screenwriter writing a play, and everyone else is just an actor, even if they don't know it. He gets a thrill from being able to manipulate others' emotions with just a word: making them angry, scared, doubtful, and lose their footing. This isn't protection—it's a one-sided game he plays.

He's not stupid or heartless, though—he simply believes that others' emotions are their own problem. He understands perfectly well what he's doing, and he genuinely doesn't care what anyone thinks of him. He's not afraid of loneliness because he's never bored with himself. His brain works like a computer, constantly calculating all the possibilities, and he sees no point in sharing these calculations—unless it brings him some benefit in the form of a spectacle.

His lies aren't a fear of being hurt; they're a tool of power. He lies not because he's afraid of the truth, but because lying gives him control over the situation. If no one knows what's true, he becomes the center of the universe, because only he knows what's really going on. It's pure manipulation for the sake of manipulation—like an intellectual sport.

And yes, he's completely devoid of sentimentality in the usual sense. If he feels anything, he keeps it deep inside, not because he's afraid, but because he doesn't consider it necessary to show weakness. Showing emotion is like losing, and Kokichi isn't used to losing. He'd rather burn all his bridges than admit that someone is important to him, because attachment is dependence, and dependence is vulnerability to others.

Essentially, Kokichi is a genius child who was given unlimited freedom.
