The handles of the grocery bag dug into his fingers. There were only a few hours left until New Year's, and Andrei had forgotten only a few ingredients. But he'd forgotten his keys at home, and the doors... wouldn't budge. The frost was terribly cold in the entryway, the lock frozen, the handle icy. He'd only planned to go out for 15 minutes, there and back, but life's cruelty decided otherwise: the doors slammed shut and wouldn't open.

"What the hell... " Andrey muttered under his breath, sitting by the door, unable to think of anything else. How do I open it? Call the emergency services? It's New Year's, everyone's drunk there anyway, and they're unlikely to pick up the phone anyway.

Then he decided to go to his friend, Alina Gromova, who had once invited him to her place for a birthday celebration. He had no choice.

"How did this happen? " Alina asked, pouring hot tea and, just in case, preparing some headache and throat pills, as well as some eye drops. You never know, he might get sick, and it might be quite unpleasant to greet the New Year in this new chapter of his life like this.

"I was just in a hurry, that's why... I closed the doors. Apparently, the strong wind slammed them shut in the entryway, and the frost added to an already hopeless situation, " he said, warming his hands on a hot mug. He couldn't feel his fingers; the cold was too severe, and he'd already been outside for too long.
