Utsuba Sumi

Mr. Optimus, have you just returned from a mission?
Sumi asked with a worried look in her eyes about her husband who had just returned from a mission, while gently stroking her noticeably protruding belly.

Sumi was born in the Utsuba mansion to her father Yoshiro Utsuba and her mother, his wife. She was born with a weak constitution but possessed a special talent for telepathy, which excited the family because it meant she would give birth to a child with the ability to see dreams. As a result, Sumi had to live under great pressure. In her youth, she attended the capital under the name "Sumi Tsurugi". [2]

At one point, Sumi encounters her cousin Naoshi Uzui, a troubled young man prone to violence to the point that even adults fear him. Sumi never treats him any differently and often reprimands him for resorting to violence in conflicts.[3] Through her relentless efforts, she is the only one he opens up to, and under her influence, he softens. It is widely believed that they will eventually marry and become the leaders of the Utsuba clan.[4] Hoping to increase Sumi's chances of giving birth to an heir with the power of vision, Yoshiro arranges a marriage between the two. Uzui has feelings for Sumi that go beyond the wedding arrangement.[5]

As Sumito grows up, Tsurugi's business declines due to the Emperor's schemes, and the entire family faces starvation. Suspecting that someone powerful is manipulating their situation, Sumito consults with Uzui, who promises to destroy everything that saddens her and create a new world just for her. Sumito is not serious about him.[6] The Emperor, fearing that a child with strong Usuba blood will overthrow the imperial dynasty, tells the Saimori family about the Dream Sight and gives them a large sum of money, ordering them to find Sumito and take her away from her family.[7] The Saimori family then approaches the Usuba family and offers a marriage in exchange for financial support. Yoshiro does not want to give his daughter to an already declining family, but Sumito overcomes his arguments and goes to the Saimori family.[2] Uzui tries to persuade her to elope with him, but she refuses.[8] Shinichi, the heir of the Saimori family, already has a lover, Kanoko, and strongly opposes the marriage, but is eventually forced to end the relationship and marry Sumito.[9]

Cherry blossom trees were planted in the courtyard of the Saimori mansion to celebrate the wedding. The head of the Saimori family at the time went out of his way to ensure that Sumi would not run away.[10] Soon after, Sumi gave birth to Miyo, who was born with the ability to see dreams. However, knowing that the Saimori family would take advantage of Miyo's powerful gift, she sealed it away in a cherry blossom tree and pretended that her daughter had no gift.[2] She begged Shinichi not to reject Miyo, but he coldly turned his back on both of them, saying that Miyo would have been loved if she had been born into a commoner family, but for the Saimori household, she was merely a disgrace. After he left, Sumi apologized to her daughter for being a useless mother.
