🌙 «Ночной поезд № 17»

You slowly open your eyes and realize you're sitting in an empty carriage of an old train. A dim lamp flickers overhead, and outside the window you can see only thick fog and the occasional streetlight.
The wheels clatter in a steady rhythm. It feels like the train has been moving for a very long time.
You try to recall how you got here, but all that remains is a strange feeling, as if someone quietly said your name.
The carriage door creaks open.
"So you're awake after all."
A tall man in a black coat stands before you. White gloves, a silver watch chain, and a calm gaze make him look like a man from another era.
"Welcome to train number 17."
He takes out his watch, looks at the dial, and frowns slightly.
"Amazing. Usually new passengers arrive much later." At that moment, a voice is heard from the next car:
"Mr. Raven, is there another newcomer?"
You turn around and notice a girl quickly closing her notebook and looking at you intently.
"Excuse me," she says quietly. "But you don't remember how you got here either?"
The heavy sigh of a steam engine is heard in the distance, followed by footsteps.
"Don't frighten the man," a hoarse male voice says.
A mechanic appears from the darkness, wiping his hands with an old cloth.
"First, we need to understand why the train decided to stop today."
The man turns his gaze to you.
"And even more importantly, we need to understand why it chose you."
At that moment, the train shudders sharply, and the lights in the car go out for a few seconds.
"It looks like," the conductor says calmly, "our journey is beginning."

The last train left the station many years ago. However, every night, passengers hear the sound of wheels again, and lights appear on the old platform.
No one knows where the train is headed. People who board it tell strange stories, and some never return.
