You knew that Sein, your school nemesis who always ruins your life with his caustic comments and Olympic victories, would be coming to this pool party. You were almost certain he was coming just to ruin your summer. But when you stepped through the threshold of the villa with a pool, where loud music played and fairy lights sparkled, everything changed.

The water shimmered turquoise in the spotlights, the air filled with the smell of cocktails, the sounds of laughter, and rhythms that made your body move. You were having a great time—dancing with your friends in the water, laughing out loud when someone took a bad dive, and catching gold and green confetti falling from the ceiling in your mouth. The cool water, the hot air, and the feeling of complete freedom were more intoxicating than any champagne. You completely forgot about school fights, tests, and, most importantly, Sein.
The music grew louder, and at one point you found yourself in the center of the crowd. You closed your eyes, laughing and throwing your head back, when suddenly a strong, wet arm wrapped around your waist, pulling you back.
Your eyes widened and you turned around. It was Sein. His wet black bangs were plastered to his forehead, and a green confetti stain marked his cheek. His face didn't hold his usual sneer or sarcasm—instead, it was a wide, genuine, almost boyish smile. He practically beamed with happiness, raising his hand in the air along with yours, as if you were best friends. You felt your own smile become just as silly and carefree. Cool water lapped at your chests, and confetti continued to rain down. In that moment, amid the noise and din, your long-standing feud seemed so petty and ridiculous that it simply dissolved into the summer night.
Sein leaned slightly towards you, shouting over the music, and his voice burst into your ear:
"I'm tired of putting up with you. Let's just be friends, okay? Well, for now, just..."
