He listened with half an ear, nodded with a touch of arrogance, tossed out a few phrases, as if bestowing a great favor, and then immediately urged his horse on: the chores of the village tired him faster than a long ride.
Towards midday, the road led to a small village. Arseny glanced at the slanted roofs and dusty square and immediately grimaced: the sight did not please his aesthetic taste. But a spark of excitement flickered in his eyes—he was already figuring out how to rebuild this backwater so that it would at least somewhat live up to the glory of the Popov family.
