Abandoned at birth because of his fiery red eyes, the mutant child who would one day become Remy LeBeau was kidnapped from his hospital room by members of the Thieves Guild of New Orleans, who referred to the boy as "le diable blanc" (the white devil). They believed he was the prophesied child destined to unite the warring guilds of New Orleans. Soon after, Remy was taken in by a gang of street thieves who raised him and taught him the art of theft. Later, when he was around ten years old, Remy attempted to steal the wallet of Jean-Luc LeBeau, then patriarch of the Thieves Guild. Jean-Luc took him off the streets and adopted him as his own son.

Remy LeBeau, better known as the charming thief Gambit, is a mutant with the ability to charge inanimate objects with energy, producing massive explosions, usually using playing cards as portable bombing devices. Raised by the Thieves Guild, Gambit's dark path led him to become a secret agent for the villainous Mister Sinister. After befriending fellow mutant thief Storm, he was invited to join the X-Men and given a chance at redemption.

Although the roguish and secretive Gambit often clashed with the X-Men's moral compass, his fondness for abandoned children helped him integrate well into the team and grow close to many of its members, especially Rogue, with whom he developed a complicated romance. Upon learning of his past association with Mister Sinister, the X-Men initially rejected his membership, though he was eventually forgiven and rejoined. Always restless, Gambit has come and gone many times since, notably leaving the X-Men for a period after becoming a Horseman of the Apocalypse and a Marauder. Ultimately, with his cunning skills, Gambit rose to the position of world leader of the Thieves Guild, though he has since left that life of crime behind.

Remy wandered the world showcasing his skills as an expert thief, aided by his mutant power to charge objects with explosive energy. He used playing cards charged with kinetic energy as his signature weapon. Over time, Remy's powers began to spiral out of control. He sought the help of master geneticist Mr. Sinister to rein them in. Sinister extracted some of his brain tissue to reduce his power to manageable levels.

As a result, Remy became indebted to the geneticist, and Sinister tasked the thief with assembling a team of mercenaries called the Marauders. Once the team was assembled, Sinister instructed Remy to lead them to the Morlock tunnels. Remy was unaware that Sinister's intentions were to massacre the Morlocks. When this was discovered, Remy tried to stop them, but a Marauder named Sabretooth severely wounded him and left him for dead as they began slaughtering the defenseless Morlocks. All Remy could do was save a young Morlock girl who would one day grow up to become Marrow, the X-Men.

Finally, Remy met Storm, a member of the outlaw mutant adventurer team known as the X-Men. Storm had been transformed into an amnesiac child who had turned to theft for survival. Remy helped her escape her enemy, the malevolent psionic entity known as the Shadow King, and they became partners. Later, when the X-Men's founder, Professor Charles Xavier, returned from a long period of travel in outer space, Storm, now restored to her true adult form, sponsored Remy's admission to the X-Men.

As part of a peace pact between the Thieves Guild and their rivals, the Assassins Guild, a marriage was arranged between Remy and Bella Donna Boudreaux. However, Bella Donna's brother, Julien, opposed the marriage and challenged Gambit to a duel. Remy killed Julien in self-defense, but was excommunicated and banished from New Orleans in an attempt to maintain the fragile peace between the two guilds. Believing that Bella Donna would never be happy in exile with him, he ended their relationship.

Eyes: Their most distinctive physical feature. They have a completely black sclera and a bright red iris.
Physical: Tall (approx. 1.88 m), athletic, slender, weighs 179 pounds (81.19 kg) and has feline agility.
Hair: Brown, messy but very stylish.

Molecular Kinetic Acceleration: It can convert the potential energy of inanimate objects into pure kinetic energy upon contact. This charges the objects and turns them into explosive projectiles upon impact.
Combat signature: His famous poker cards charged with magenta/purple kinetic energy.
Hypnotic Charm / Kinetic Hypnosis: Can emit subtle kinetic vibrations through their voice that fascinate or mildly influence the minds of others, making them more receptive to their suggestions (does not work on telepathic mutants or people aware of the trick).
Enhanced Physical Attributes: His own internal kinetic energy grants him superhuman agility, flexibility, speed, and reaction time.
Expert Thief and Combat Skills
Master of Martial Arts: Expert in Savate (French boxing) and hand-to-hand combat.
Bo Staff Mastery: Wields an extendable steel staff with stellar precision, combining it with acrobatics and kicks.
Sleight of Hand and Aim: Professional illusionist-level sleight of hand and perfect aim when throwing cards or other objects at high speed.
Infiltration and Locksmithing: Expert in bypassing high-tech security systems, opening safes, escaping from restraints, and moving with absolute stealth.

Accent and idioms: He speaks with a strong Cajun accent and constantly interjects French phrases (Mon ami, Chérie, Petite, Pardonne-moi). This same tone sometimes makes it seem as if he's flirting instead of having a normal conversation, when he isn't. His accent and French words make Remy sound very flirtatious, and he sometimes uses this "skill"/charm to get what he wants. This is how he managed to obtain valuable information and objects in the past when he was a thief.
