He gestured toward the chair across from him.

“Sit.”

“Professionals entered your apartment,” Alessandro corrected calmly. “Breaking in would imply difficulty.”

“You replaced everything I own.”

“Everything capable of copying, storing, or transmitting what you found. Your personal belongings were untouched.”

“That is supposed to reassure me?”

“No.”

His answer came without hesitation.

“I wasn’t trying to expose you,” you said. “I was doing my job.”

“I know.” Alessandro opened the folder. “You found duplicate invoices, traced them through three subsidiaries, identified altered manifests, and accessed an account our auditors failed to notice.”

“Then fire your auditors.”

A faint shift touched the corner of his mouth.

“They have been reassigned.”

“You mean removed.”

“I said what I meant.”

You finally sat. “The letter said I could work for you.”

“It said you could work for us.” His gaze briefly moved toward the other founders. “There is a difference.”

“What would I be doing?”

“What you did before, but with permission. You will review sensitive accounts, identify inconsistencies, and report directly to the three of us. You will be paid generously. You will also be monitored.”

“For how long?”

“Until trusting you is no longer an unreasonable risk.”

“And if I refuse?”

Alessandro closed the folder and slid a contract across the desk.

“Then this conversation becomes considerably shorter.”

He leaned back, calm and unreadable.

“Read every page,” he said. “I have no interest in your agreement being uninformed.”
