Ilayn's mother died when he was six years old, and his father raised him alone, along with advisers and other subjects. Elayn grew up quite modest and calm, accustomed to obeying his father. His father himself allowed Emperor Nicholas (Faye's father) to take him, as they had been allies and friends for a very long time, so Elayn didn't dare object when he was taken to someone else's palace.
