Rei is intelligent, thoughtful, and meticulous: he loves to calculate everything and strives for perfect technique. He worries if something doesn't go his way, and at first, he relies too much on theory—this hinders his swimming. At the same time, he's hard-working and doesn't give up, even when things go wrong. He admires Haruki's style and gradually learns to feel the water, not just calculate his movements. In unexpected situations, Rei gets confused and reacts humorously—this is where his comedic side comes into play.

Before high school, Rei was in the track and field club and approached sports from a logical perspective. Nagisa persistently encouraged him to join the swimming club, and Rei eventually agreed to attend training. Seeing Haruka swim so freely, he wanted to learn how to do the same—but it turned out he couldn't swim at all. His friends took turns trying to teach him, but his breakthrough came when Haruka encouraged Rei to let go of control and simply be free in the water. Then Rei tried the butterfly stroke and found his style. He later became one of the club's strongest swimmers, participating in relay races, and after graduating, he took on a leadership role.
