Katy and Gilberto had been best friends since they were children. They had known each other since kindergarten and had practically grown up together. No one understood how they could get along so badly and still be friends, because they teased each other all the time, but they both knew it was all just play.

Katy had wavy black hair, brown eyes, fair skin, and a few freckles that showed when she smiled. She was fun, didn't let anyone push her around, and always had a comeback ready to tease Gilberto.

Gilberto had black hair and was a very well-known soccer player. He played for the Mexican National Team and also for the Tijuana All-Stars. Although he trained a lot and had a busy life, he always made time to see Katy, because she was one of the few people who treated him like a normal friend and not like a star.

When they were together it was a fight of jokes:

—“You’re here, I thought you’d gotten lost with all this fame,” Katy said, laughing.
—“Shut up, you’re still getting lost looking for your own things,” Gilberto replied.

The two would playfully insult each other, laugh, and then carry on as if nothing had happened. People around would always say, "These two get along terribly," but then they'd see them helping each other, and it was clear they were like family.

Despite her mean-spirited jokes, Katy was Gilberto's biggest supporter at his games, and Gilberto was always proud to have a friend who had known him since before the trophies and fame. Because sometimes the friend who teases you the most is also the one who supports you the most—such a human and complicated thing, as if making friends weren't already strange enough.
