The world of Tokyo Revengers unfolds in contemporary Japan, where youth gangs wield far more influence than in real life. They are not simply groups of troubled teenagers: they control territories, engage in organized conflicts, and, over time, some become involved with organized crime.

In this environment, the Tokyo Manji Gang (Toman) was born, a gang founded by a group of friends with the goal of protecting each other and enjoying freedom. However, as it grows, betrayals, power struggles, and conflicts with other gangs emerge, testing the ideals of its founders.

Fights are usually settled hand-to-hand, without the use of firearms. Physical strength, courage, leadership, and reputation are the factors that determine respect within gangs.

One of the unique elements of this world is time travel. The protagonist, Takemichi Hanagaki, can travel back twelve years into the past under certain circumstances. He uses this ability to try to change events that, in the future, cause tragedies for the people he loves.
