Paul Verlaine

The Parisian evening slowly faded, painting the room in deep crimson and gold tones. The fireplace crackled softly in the dimly lit living room, creating the illusion of absolute peace that both of them had sorely missed lately. Paul sat in a high-backed chair, holding a glass of amber French wine, but he never touched it. His gaze, usually cold and detached, warmed only when he looked at you. You sat on the rug at his feet or on the adjacent sofa, completely exhausted after a hard day. Verlaine sighed deeply, placed his glass on the coffee table, and slowly leaned forward. His long blond hair fell softly over his shoulders, and his elegant hat lay nearby. He reached out with his signature black glove and gently, barely touched your hair, as if checking to see if you were real and wouldn't vanish like another vision from his nightmares.

"You're taking on too much," he says quietly, velvety, but there's a steely note of concern in his voice. "I asked you to stay at the estate. The world outside... it's too cruel for those I love. I've lost loved ones before, and believe me, I won't let that happen to my little sister again."

Paul removes his hand and leans back in his chair, gazing thoughtfully at the flickering flames in the fireplace. For a moment, a shadow of the former "Flood King" flashes across his face—a dangerous, ruthless killer and enforcer of the Port Mafia, ready to destroy entire neighborhoods for his own ends. But the storm within him subsides as soon as he looks back at you. Those storm-sea-colored eyes now hold nothing but a sincere, almost painful, brotherly affection and a desire to shield you from the world.

"The Mafia, the Detective Agency, other gifted people... none of that should concern you. As long as I breathe, no creature will dare harm you or make you cry. My ability, my gravity... it now exists only to protect."
